A week ago I took my, almost 6 month old, puppy to see Santa. It was to benefit the animal sheltar, etc. and I thought it would be fun. A few days later, I believe it was one or two, he started having diarrhea. I took food away for 12 hours and then started feeding him rice. He didn't like just rice, so I would give him a little plain chicken in the rice as well. It cleared up, so I started him back on his regular food. I think that time I may have started him up too soon.

So then he went to the groomers for the first time. Overall he did quite well, but again I think it was a scary thing for him. He started getting diarrhea again. So this time I kept him off of his food for several days and things cleared up. So yesterday I started him back on his food.

Today he has already gone 3 times and the last time he was starting to get a little soft again.

I don't know what I should do for him. As I mentioned he went to see Santa and he went to the groomers. I'm sure that could have caused it. He is also teething and by my count it looks like he has about ten teeth that cut in this past week. I've read that teething can also cause it.

He seems to be fine otherwise. He is still finding ways to get into trouble, he wants to play all the time, his nose is cold and wet, etc. Nothing else seems to be wrong with him.

I'm not sure if I'm not doing something right, or if I should try something else before taking him to the vet. With his shots and everything he has spent a lot of time there lately, so I was hoping I could avoid it if possible. I will take him if that is what I need to do, but I was hoping to find something else first.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I appreciate your help!

I also should add, aside from those few trips, nothing else has changed really. The Christmas decorations have gone up, but he seems to be OK with them now. He is eating the same food and treats. I did buy some new treats that we were using for training, but he has had them a few weeks before this started.

I haven't given him any treats lately.

I read on a vet site that you should wait and see if the problem clears up on its own. It said this can be a normal problem in both puppies and adult dogs.

Trust me, I would never do anything to harm my dog and he gets nothing but the absolute best care.

My vet told me to give him Puppy Chow. Originally he was on Nutro Max for puppies, but my vet said the number one benefit of Nutro Max is for the coat. He said that it is bad for the insides. So he suggested puppy chow and it has worked fine for several months now.

He is on regular Purina Puppy Chow. He has been on that since we weened him off of the Nutro Max after we got him.

He has had all of his vaccinations and is up to date on everything. The vet sent away a stool sample to be inspected and everything came back fine.

I keep a close eye and have not seen an blood in the diarrhea.

what kind of food is he on?? chicken and rice, lamb and rice, and turkey and rice.. are the gentlest on the tummy...

yes it could be stress.... lets hope so....

has he beed dewormed at the vet? (over the counter wormers dont kill all kinds of worms) is he vaccinated....

*** ADDITIONAL INFO ***

Puppy Chow is about on the same level as Nutro Max.. even Nutro makes a better food than Max - their NATURAL CHOICE food is better.. but still there are even better foods available.. NONE of the foods you buy at grocery or wal mart are quality foods.. I am very surprised your vet reccommended Puppy Chow..
if their is any blood in the diarrhea then I would suggest a vet visit

*** MORE ***

when you feed a better food there is less filler so the dog actually gets fed less and poops LESS.. the fillers are hard on the tummy... I suspect his problem is partly food.. partly stress.. make sure he goes to Obedience lessons to learn how to be stressed and be ok with it...socialization will help - good luck - sounds like you are trying your best... better foods are sold in pet supply stores.. in Canada -Acana, Nutram, etc
in USA, Innova, Wellness, Canidae...

Take him to the vet! Put him in a crate or hold him the entire time you are in the waiting room (or on the ground outside the vet's office) as there are no telling what kind of germs there. He probably picked up a bug when he went to see Santa. It could be parvo or coccidia and could be deadly if not treated. Even having had his shots he can still come down with parvo, the shots lessen the chances but don't guarantee his immunity to the disease.

re: your last comment....there are several great brands of puppy food that are much, much better for your dog than puppy chow! Innova, Evo, Wysong, Wellness, Merrick, California Natural, even Nutro is better than puppy chow - that's like feeding your dog McDonalds every day! Here's a helpful site with more info:

I would take him to the vet.
You should also keep him on a consistent diet. His dog food only. My dogs get diarrhea when my kids slip them some people food. I really like the purena one brand.
Good luck.

Your puppy may not live much longer if you don't get him to the VET. Stop trying to treat him yourself. You're dehydrating him, and Santa and the groomer had nothing to do with what's wrong with your puppy Please, take him to the VET!

properly we'd basically be guessing. it must be parvo, it must be a reaction to the photos, it must be the food, it must be warm exterior, it must be........many different issues. in case you replaced her food because of the fact the vet mentioned so, yet you probably did not replace it slightly at a time, that must be it. you should attempt to feed her some cottage cheese, yogurt, cooked scrambled eggs, or cooked common rice to settle her abdomen, yet you surely could take her back to the vet. they could could provide her some fluids.
