My new dachshund FREAKS OUT from time to time for no apparent reason when he's on his leash. We will be walking and all of a sudden he will just STOP, dig his paws in and refuse to walk. The odd thing is we've tried to observe when he does it and there's no pattern or reoccurring thing that would make him so skittish. It can be on concrete, on grass, on pavement, when there's cars or when there arent, people near or not...it's really random not to mention aggrevating! Anyone had a similar experience and know how to break him of this??

He is 5 months old and I got him from a pet store so he is pretty well socialized. Also, it isn't the length of time we are out- we could have been out for 5 minutes or 30 minutes-he does it so randomly.

It could be he just doesn't want to go for a walk or he doesn't want to walk anymore. On our normal route, my dog does this if a storm is coming, if she saw lightning, saw or heard fireworks. She also does it sometimes if the normal people aren't with her on her walk, she just doesn't want to go. When we take a long route, she does this when she's tired and doesn't want to walk anymore. On our short or long route, sometimes she just doesn't feel like walking. You couldn't find anything physical that makes him stop so try to think of what else could make him stop. He's a small dog, so the first couple of times try to verbally coax him to come after that pull him while telling him to "Come", don't just pull. He has to understand why you're pulling. It won't happen after the first walk, but after a few walks, your dog should get the message and you'll just have to tell him to "Come" or give a slight tug on the leash. This seems more like a behavior problem than anything else. You're dog is used to being able to stop and not move when he wants. Right now he's the dominant one, you need to show him that your the dominant one and what you say goes. The main thing when trying to teach a new behavior, be patient. If you get aggrevated and start yelling and yanking your dog, he'll get scared. If you keep your patience, you can teach him the new behavior and he'll still respect you.

First of all, how old is the dog? Second of all, how well socialized is he? Socialization plays a tremendous role in having a healthy, sound dog. Lack of it will cause environmental sensitivity issues which is what your dog is exhibiting right now. Or it could be weak nerves. A vet will not be able to help in either of those 2 cases. Neither will the food idea. And whatever you do, do not praise, pet or pick up the dog when he he feeling that way. You will just be re-enforcing bad ideas into his head.

A dachshund has a long body, but very short legs...he has to take a lot of steps to make up one of yours. He's probably tired from getting his poor little legs walked off. Pick him up and carry him for a little ways, then put him back down and see what his reaction is.

i would bring him to a vet and they might be able to help. Something just might be bothering her/him in her/his leg.
Good Luck.
