Alot of the times i would pick a female over a male because they are smaller. Males tend more territoral and leave more markings, and females are usually also eaiser to train=) If i was ever going to buy a pug though i think i would focuse more on personality then gender, there are great dogs that are female or male, since i don't think there is a real difference i would pick whichever one i feel in love with first (probably the first one i saw^_^)
In any other breed i would usually pick a female though!

I have had animals as pets in my home all my life (50 now) and I have always preferred females. They seem to be easier to train to go outside and do their do and they don't tend to have the desire to mark their teritories all over the place on a regular basis. Male dogs will also tend to want to mark their territories when other animals and even new people come to visit you! My husband and I raised German Shephards at one time and had both a male and female that we bread. The male was the first dog I was ever around that I was unsure of. He seemed naturally aggressive and unpredictable. His training was exactly the same as the female but she was very docile, easy going, and loving. The male on the other hand seemed to naturally be standoffish and hard to figure and we had to keep him fenced at all times because he could be a danger to strangers. Never figured out why he was like that.

Well, if you are asking because you want a playful one, both can work , because I had a female one before.,and it was fast! Then later I got a male the male was weak, but after weeks of training you couldn't even see like if you were haveing a race to get the ball it would take 30 seconds 5 for running and like 25 for trying to get it cause they would tackle each other and stuff. It was really cute watching em play. Now the answer to your question: I would get both like I did because they are so fun you can forget.

I have a female pug and she is pretty good. She is fairly hyper but that is their nature. I don't like the fact that the male cocks it's leg and they hump everything in sight!

I love the female of the species (Being male, I suppose) But, they are an added responsibility. Do you want the ease of having hassle -free male aggression? Or do you want the gentle love of the female, with the burden of responsibility. Both are wonderful. Personally, I would pefer both, as they both complement each other. I would hate to choose.

I think male pugs are a little more easy going and friendly than the girls. The girls tend to take theselves more mre seriously than neutered males. But girls dont mark their territory or have a higher chance of running away. But its up to you. :-]
