A puppy leaving it's litter mates and going to it's new home is a completely different thing from being weaned and separated from it's mother.

We start the weaning process at 28 days (4 weeks) by separating the mother during the day (feeding the puppy's 3x during the day) and then allowing them to be with their mother at night. Then at 35 days (five weeks) the pups can be permanently separated from their mother, and placed on a 4x feeding schedule. The litter however should remain together for a minimum of 49 days (7 weeks) and a maximum of 70 days (10 weeks) for best socialization.

Eight weeks is the minimal, 9 weeks is even bigger. Depends at the breed, in a few instances. With a few small breeds, the breeders choose to maintain the muddle in combination till 12 weeks. A puppy learns plenty from mother and littermates among the a while of 6 and nine weeks, so, although it's SAFE to take a puppy away as soon as it is weaned, it isn't first-rate. Better to have the ones few further weeks earlier than setting apart the muddle.

Puppies should stay with their mother for at least 6 weeks --8 weeks is better. They learn things from their mother that they won't learn later. Also, they really can't eat only "puppy food" until that time --the mother's milk has more nutritional value for the puppy.

Puppies that are taken from the mother too early may have behaviors that are not desirable.

No sooner that 6 weeks, and six weeks is a little early. Get a puppy that is 7-8 weeks or older.

I recommend 8weeks at least, some people say 6 weeks but that is too young. I have a chocolate lab puppy, now 8 months, but we got her at 6weeks and she had not really learned a whole lot. Luckily we had another lab who showed her the ropes. But I let my pups go at 8 weeks.

Normally by 6 wks. old. I always started my puppies on really
moist dog food for puppies when they started toddling around.
Although some puppies take to it right away and some of the litter
doesnt. There are lots of things to consider also about the
mother and the siblings.

Once they are weaned they can be removed from mom.
6 weeks at the youngest the longer they are with the mom and the litter the better the social skills they will have.
They learn about social behavior with the litter. I like to have them together for 8 weeks or more.
