I want a five generation pedigree from AKC so I can see what the parents and grandparents have done and what titles they have earned.
I want an OFA certification and a CERF certification.
I look for a background in hunting trials rather than a heavy show background.
I wnat to see both parents on site and ve able to question the owners of the parents. I want to see the entire litter.
I look for these when I am looking for a Weimaraner pup.
For a Doberman I want
the same things but I also want a Von Willedbrands test and a heart test on the parents, and any history of Wobbler's in any of the parents or grandparents.
It depends on the breed of dog you are looking at.
I would recommed you look at the AKC web site and find out what diseases if any that breed is prone to a look to see if the parents have been tested.
I also want a health guarantee on the dog for genetic things for the life of the dog.

There are a lot of things to look for other than wanting to see the parents of the puppies. If one parent isn't around then ask where you can go to see it. Look at the puppies... watch how they act towards the owner. Take note of the living situation of the dog. How many other dogs is she breeding or what other kinds does she have. Don 't be afraid to look at the health records of the dog. Ask about a guarantee of the puppy you are buying. Never never be afraid to ask questions nor to see papers. Never buy a dog with out the litter papers most breeders will tell you that they will send the papers to you. Depends what county you are from. The USA ACK get the litter paper to the owners right away. If a breeder isn't willing to work with you and answer any question you may ask. Then a red light should go off. Ask if they are DNA tested if she has many males around. Ask how often she breeds the dogs. You may also ask for phone numbers of other customers that she sold her puppies too. Take your time and play with the puppies. Good luck to you.

Here all the questions you need for the breeder:
-How long have you been breeding this type of dog?
-How long have you been a breeder?
-Can i have the numbers of previous clients that bought your puppies??
-Can I see the health records?
-Are they vet checked?
-Can I see their pedigree?
-Do you show your dogs?
-Can I see their pedigree?
-Can i see the parents?
( When you see the parents you should get a good look at what the puppies will look like when they get older. Make sure they are in good condition )
Remember, a breeder should always be willing to give you everything about the puppy. Do not purchase a puppy who is not vet checked, has no pedigree, you havent seen the parents/the parents were in poor condition, if the puppy is lazy and not curiosly running around trying to find out everything, and if the puppy has discharge from its eyes. Good Luck!

You definitely should check out their genetics - make sure there are no known genetic defects. Of course, this is made easier if the puppy is purebred and AKC or UKC registered. It's actually part of a package offered when registering your pup. You can trace their heritage back for generations. Depending on the breed, you may be able to get hip and eye certifications on the parents as well. I recently bought an Australian Shepherd and was able to trace her ancestry back 7 generations, including the hip and eye certifications for not only her parents, but grandparents, great grandparents, great great, great great great, etc. Also received eye and hip certifications on her, which were done at Cornell University.
Great question!

It depends on the breed of dogs. All breeds are prone to some health issues. For example, if I wanted a Doberman I'd want to know that the parents had the heart tested, the hips rated Good or Excellent by OFA, and they've been tested to be clear of the Von Willebrand gene. I'd also want to know what sort of titles were on the parents and what sort of health guarantees come with the pup. You can start by going to AKC.org and finding the national breed club. Breed clubs have breeder referrals that will only list Code of Ethics breeders. It's not a guarantee, but it's a good place to start.

Stuff like what breed are they? What's the age of the mother? What condition of health is she in? How many litters has she had? How many puppies were there in the litter? How long have they had her? What's her health like? What's her temperament like? Can you see her?
These questions are just to learn more about your puppy, as well at to make sure you're getting the healthiest one possible, and to make sure you're not getting a puppy from someone who abuses their own dog.
Also ask questions about the puppy, like what were the owners feeding it (which brand of dog food)? What shots has it gotten? Has it been sick at all? Have the other puppies placed in good homes yet?

Immunisation,. Depending on which breed, what inheirited disorders the have been tested and cleared for eg hip displaysia in rottweilers. Research the breed you are interested in and find out any possible inheirited disease, breed anomalous behaviour eg guarding issues and there are some problems not linked to specific breed but may be caused due to inbreeding eg hypothyriodism. I personally would also meet the parents to find out basic personality traits eg aggression. Also if looking for a show dog, lineage, to brag about the champs your baby was bred from. All breeding dogs should be tested for breed inheirited diseases before they can be bred to ensure healthy pups, but only buy from registered breeders because they wish to breed out the problems you should be cautious of. Good luck

Any health problems. You would also want to see how there temperaments are. If the parents are hyper and skittish, then odds are that the puppies are going to be hyper and skittish as well. You can also look at the parents to see how big your puppy has the potential to be.
