She will "hear something" and stare at the floor & actually chase something that isn't there. Any ideas?

Are you sure she's not after shadows or reflections? My dog is crazy about them and will chase them for hours on end outside.

A dog can usually "sense" something thats not actually there. It may jsut sniff around to see if anything is there like a spirit,etc. That's just a dog's nature so don't mind it.

Dogs often hear or smell better than they can see. If they hear something or smell something they will look in the direction of what they think is the source. They will stare in that direction, thinking that what they are sensing will eventually reveal itself.
It's normal, though it can be disconcerting.

she might be getting older...or maybe she's just really lonely and something tragic happened in her life. it happened with my second cat, she would run around the house chasing 'nothing' after she licked some cream we were supposed to put on her that makes hair not fall out so much. she like got psych-attacks and she died the next day.

Dogs are ultra sensitive and she probably does see something. Just because you cannot see it, does not mean there is nothing there. When your dog acts that way, take notice.

How do you know theres nothing there ? Dogs have a heightened sense of perception. Dont worry about it unless she starts to growl !

Your dog is trying to sniff out the thing that the nois is coming from.

maybe she has stigmatism and sees double and tries to chase that take her to the vet for a check up and mention this to them

she either has a seeing problem so you should think about taking her to the doctor or she might sense something is there even though it is not?
