An HP Pavillion 500 (3 years old ? neighbor's machine - I'm asked to be the expert). While the monitor works enough to complain that it isn't getting input, the computer doesn't light up or do anything. Broken switch ?
I vaguely recalled that the computer battery has to be good. So I pulled it and told them to get it tested. Is there any truth to the idea that the battery can stop the rest of the computer from working ?
If not, then is there a simple step by step for me to try to isolate. I'm guessing that the power supply is fried. And I suppose the next step would be to check Craigslist to see if there's another HP Pavillion 500 for sale for $10 so that I could try to borrow its power
supply, but I don't know if all the connectors are easy to work with.
Still, if they are, then swapping in a power supply would be the next step, right ? And then, other people have mentioned that after that they find something is fried anyway. But that's luck right ?

thanks
Charlie

I am planning on purchasing a computer for my grandma who wants a computer. I am thinking about a Mac because the mouse only has one button, which I think would be less confusing for her. However, which interface would be better and easier for her? Explain.

My old computer decided to freak out and break down. Now it only starts in safe mode and when I run all the diagnostic programs and restart it my monitor is blank. I can hear it start up again and everything is fine but it just won't show on my monitor. And yes, I have tried using a different monitor (I have two PC's). So I have broken down and purchased a new PC to replace my old faithfull. But how can I get my all my information/data onto my new PC? Should I just take it to a shop?

My mom's planning to buy a desktop for us. She left the task of choosing the best high-end desktop to me. However, I'm still concern about the price and I don't want her ending up shocked about it.

Well, to be more specific...Which do you think is better here?

A. Gateway GM5266E Minitower
Intel Viiv Technology, Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6400, 2.13GHz, 2GB RAM, 320GB Hard Drive, 16X DVD+/-RW Drive, Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005

or

B. HP Pavilion m7640n TV Minitower
AMD LIVE Technology, AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ 2.6GHz Processor, 2GB RAM, 320GB Hard Drive, 16X DVD+/-RW Drive, Windows XP Media Center 2005

If you could give the good and the bad of an HP and Gateway and the AMD and the Intel, it would really help.

Thank you so much.

I have a Fujitsu Scaleo P PC - running Windows XP - excellent up until now! Strange things happening - last few weeks when I switch on, getting an 'audio wizard' message telling me something needs fixed! Have looked and checked all connections! Able to cancel it tho and carry on working. Then today, I wanted to back up onto CD and my DVD RW drive wont open - no light etc - not sure where to go from here! Can anyone give me some advice! Thanks!

When I close down Windows, I usually put it on "Standby", but before i do, a meesage comes on that says I can put it in "hybernation" if I hold down the shift key. I haven't done that because I don't know what hybernation does, or more importantly how to stop it if I were to start it.
Does anyone use this feature? If so, what is it and how to restart my computer once I want to use it again?

Hello, i am putting a pc togeather, and i got all my parts hooked up. Then when i went to start the PC my power lights/fans come on and i heard my hard drive come on with my CD ROM working. Then like after 30 seconds of the computer being on it would totally loose power and go off. It is set on 115v. Then i tryed setting it on 230v, and the computer would stay on then but my hard drive wouldn't work with 230v, and the power light would just blink. Then i got to reading and seen 115V is what i need it on for united states. so i was just wondering if it sounds like my power supply is bad? It is a 450 XION power supply new.
