Search for "Eraser Pro" via google. I've used it. Its totally virus free and will erase things off the drive so that even the CIA can't find them!
Totally free, totally safe, totally gone.

This free utility will permantely erase everything on the hard drive :
http://dban.sourceforge.net/
Darik's Boot and Nuke ("DBAN") is a self-contained boot floppy that securely wipes the hard disks of most computers. DBAN will automatically and completely delete the contents of any hard disk that it can detect, which makes it an appropriate utility for bulk or emergency data destruction.
DBAN is a means of ensuring due diligence in computer recycling, a way of preventing identity theft if you want to sell a computer, and a good way to totally clean a Microsoft Windows installation of viruses and spyware. DBAN prevents or thoroughly hinders all known techniques of hard disk forensic analysis.

Yes there are a number of ways to do this. You can reformat the drive and that will erase everything form the hard drive, but you will have to reinstall everything if you do it that way including the operating system. You can use windows disk clean up program to get rid of some of the files, but you will have to go through the other ones and delete them manually.

Like kill disk would work. If you have XP or windows already loaded, then go to the recovery system, where it can reformat your disc drive and put it to factory conditions. Remember some hard drive cleaners may WIPE OUT your windows from your computer and then you are screwed. You will then have to go BUY a windows disk to put the program back on your computer. So try the recovery program first from the computer itself.

If you have someone else's data, I would hope that they would have cleaned the disk sufficiently. If they were careless and left sensitive/incriminating data on there, my advice would be to blackmail them with it. Remember-- knowledge is power.
If your moral sensibilities won't allow you to blackmail someone (Hey- There's still honest people out there!) then just reinstall the OS and select the 'format' option when it wants to pick what disk space to use.
Good luck and have a great day.

Yes. It's called formatting the disk. Depending on what you've got, it should be fairly easy. It'll wipe EVERYTHING and you'll need a backup disc and/or a Windows CD.

Format it... setup your own partition scheme, install your own OS, and start from scratch. You'd want to do this anyway with a new computer.
