I am trying to connect two internal dvd players for my computer via a y cable (connect the cable to one, then connect it to the other) yet when I try to turn my computer on, all I get is a blank screen. what am I doing wrong? should I get a different cable?

You are short circuiting something in the process.
I've never heard of a Y cable for internal DVD drives.

You need to use a standard IDE cable. Configure one device as Master & the other as Slave.

As phillip said, you need an IDE cable. You want one that resembles the following bad example:

......||=====||==||

.........................^- Top drive
...................^-Bottom drive
......^-Motherboard

It's a 40-pin connector. 2x20 holes in each of the "plugs".
