Desktops - January 2007

After installing an HP DVD writer w/LightScribe (dvd840i), a tray balloon pops up every time my computer (w/XP Home) is turned on saying "found new hardware" and then the Add Hardware Wizard appears. I used the included Nero software cd, then uninstalled and reinstalled, but still have it. Went to HP's site and downloaded an update. Still get the "found new hardware" and wizard. Any way to get rid of these?

Initial cold boot I will have only 113 MB and if I reboot again I will have 880 MB free. What exactly is going on?

My friends compute hung on him. He tried to turn it off to no avail. Had to result in unplugging it. He plugged it in again and tried to turn it on. Three beeps came out and a No Video Input message came onscreen. Does this mean his HDD and Video Card is bad??

yesterday i got the classic "reboot with proper booting device or insert proper booting device" error after a switch off and a cold boot. Now, the when i enter BIOS, under drives the only drive detected is my cd/dvd and cdrw/dvdrw drives. also, under boot priority, my hard drive is not listed. what i believe happened is that when i switched off, my BIOS settings got wiped. i have checked all my system connections in the box (everythings normal). I have no idea how to make it detect the hard drive.

anyone know how?

I'm wanting to build a computer soon but I don't know which hardware is the best and not too expensive. Basically, I want a computer capable of running the newest and latest games but also work well when wanting to do other things such as video editing, entertainment, etc. I'm trying to make a list of the things I'll need to buy -- Motherboard, Video card, Power supply, etc...

I could go to some website like newegg.com but I want to make sure that everything I get is the best but also not too expensive. If anyone has any experience in building computers/buying the best hardware, then please let me know EACH thing I'll need to make it run properly and what you consider to be the best buy and would recommend to me.

I went to futureshop.ca and bestbuy.ca and they were selling fairy good comps at a low price(ill put info below) ..I need a pc that is low price but is pretty good..refurbished comps seems to be what im looking for
but are they worth it?

I went to dell.ca(yes im canadian) and im looking for a computer that is low price but that can be good for gaming..so i went to customize this "Dimension E521"


originally 399$ ,it had a crappy integrated vid card which is the "NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE Integrated Graphics GPU" so i customizedit to 256MB ATI Radeon X1300 Pro [add $120]

I have an emachine W3503 and I wanna know after replacing the internal hard drive with one that has a lot more memory what do you do after that? I heard that it takes several days for everything to tune itself with the computer or something to that effect. Is there a lot of work changing one and are you good to go after that's done?

This is a relative's system that did not have a pop up blocker or anti virus protection on it since March of 2006. A free internet "house call" revealed that there are over 100 malware type programs on it. Extra toolbars and Adware are evident. At this point I dont think Norton or Mcafee will be able to correct all problems.
I believe I have all of the restore disk but I am not sure. Due to the nature of the problem I was unable to restore it to a "set point." I tried tapping F12 on start up. I was taken to a menu that listed 7 things I believe. System Restore was NOT an option on that menu
I didn't think it would be, as it came with all of the restore disks.
Presently I have 8 disks I beleive to be Restore Disks.

HOW DO I RESTORE THIS MACHINE?
