2GB is 2024MB (in words, two gigabytes is 2024 megabytes). (Now, if you were asking about hard drive space, 2GB means 2000MB. Don't ask me why they use two different standards, but they do)
256MB might be enough for you, but you will probably see quite a bit less aggravation from your computer if you put in a total of 512 or 768, or even 1024MB (aka 1GB). The casual computer user will be alright with 512, and 1GB would be ideal (eg, no slowdown because of too little memory). Ignore that CK1 guy, 1GB will probably be more than you'll need.
2GB is overkill for everyone that is not a bigtime gamer or a professional user.

The choice is yours. I suggest if your using windows XP to have 1gb (1024mb) of ram. If on windows 98 you only need 512 or 256. Please make sure when getting a memory upgrade that you A) stick with the same manufacturer of the ram you already have. or better still scrap the old ram. B) stick to the same memory sizes you install. i.e. using 2 sticks of 512mb. not one of 128 and one of 256. C) dont get ripped off. Many places will install the ram while you wait, many for free. If not ask for a flat rate of $30 or less, as it takes no more than 5 minutes for someone like myself to make this simple upgrade. Best of luck in your purchase.

Does this mean you can have up to 2Gb of memory? Whoo Hoo! Go for it. 1 Gb is 1,024 Mb. So 2 Gb would be twice that. If you've got the money, get as much as you can in two or three sticks. Do not move the first one, put the others in one by one after that.

You should put 1GB in another slot. That will help you better. Anyway, if you buy 4 2GB Memory sticks, then you could have a total of 6GB of RAM!!! No one as far as I know ever thought of that! Even though it would cost you a lot of money, your computer would NEVER EVER freeze again! The maximum people ever think of using is 4GB. (Thats super good, too.) But 6GB, that's good.

That is odd if it has three slots. You need to find your motherboard specs online. Most only have two and it would be 2 X 1gb = 2gb. Or 2 X 512 = 1gb. Not sure if you could just put them in two. I would look it up online. Also make sure they are all matching or you could have problems.

2 GB = 2048 MB
2 GB is an odd maximum for 3 slots but you're going to need bigger than 256 MB RAM sticks to get up to 2 GB.

1 GB = 1024MB this means that you can slot in 4X 512MB Dimms or 2X 1024MB dims. A dim is the memory module that you can slot in. You can also add as much 512MB dimms as you like to the current 256MB ram you have and you would not exceed your cap.

if you mean RAM memory you should consider this :
you can add Ram with diffrent capacity but their bus should be the same , forexample if your computer has 2x 256 MB ram Bus 400 , you can add 512 MB ram bus 400 .

2,000 megabytes
1,000 bytes = 1 kilobyte (kb), 1,000 kilobytes = 1 megabyte (mb), 1,000 megabytes = 1 gigabyte(gb), 1,000 gigabytes = 1 terabyte
It goes higher, but the average person will not use that much memory. (Not now at least...)

2GB is 2000MB. I wouldn't try using more than 2 memory boards in the PC. 512MB to 1024MB should be all you ever need.
And stop calling me granny.
