sounds like the windows explorer has been corrupted >> quite a common problem try this first
restart the computer and keep tapping f5 or f8 and then select last known good configuration >> see if this works
if not do the f5 and f8 again and choose safemode > allow it to go into windows can you see your icons? if so just restart and go back to windows - hopefully you should get the internet explorer back
if not >> to get your explorer going again - press alt ctrl and del and select new task and then type explorer - this should start the explorer again
RESTART see if it come back normal
if not do the f5 and f8 again this time select the safemode with command prompt then at the flashing cursor type
%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
this should start the system restore > restore to a earlier date to see if this sorts the problem out
If not you may have to do a recovery on the pc
It is unlikely that you have a virus

Well, I had a similar problem like this. Do the following:
1. Press Control+Alt+Delete.
2. Click on New Task (at the bottom)
3. Type in the following: C:/
Now everything should be there.
If it's not, then tell the librarian and maybe they'll fix it. If not, then you need to reinstall Windows XP, 2000, ME or whatever it is.
Your problem is a virus. Try not to download too many programs and stuff.
To fix this problem I think this site might help:

Go to the Start Menu! Then All Programs, Acessories, System Tools, System Restore. Then follow the instructions. That the computer back to the time where it was preforming properly! It will shut down and do all the work by itself. When it turns on again it will say weither or not it was complete. If it completed just click on done. There you go! Good luck!

Without more information, it is hard to say. It sounds like explorer.exe is not running. If you have Windows 2000 or XP, hit "Control-Alt-Delete" and choose Task Manager. Go to File, New Task and then Run and type in explorer.exe to see if it starts.
If you get it started, think about removing the last program(s) installed, or do a system restore.
Good luck

if you are using windows XP and can use your mouse:
right click anywhere on the desktop hover over arrange icons by, click show desktop icons
if you are using any windows OS and mouse doesn't work:
hit ctrl + alt + dlt and kill any processes that are making your computer slow
this one is the most likely problem, your computer has a virus or 5 reeking havoc on your system
If none of these help, please post more details on what the problem is and what you've done to try to resolve it...
