After installing an HP DVD writer w/LightScribe (dvd840i), a tray balloon pops up every time my computer (w/XP Home) is turned on saying "found new hardware" and then the Add Hardware Wizard appears. I used the included Nero software cd, then uninstalled and reinstalled, but still have it. Went to HP's site and downloaded an update. Still get the "found new hardware" and wizard. Any way to get rid of these?

It sounds like the BIOS has not detected the presence of the DVD burner. Do you have a CD-ROM attached also, or is the DVD all by itself on the IDE cable ??
In my system for example :
I have main hard drive (C:) on primary IDE cable slot, & backup hard drive (D:) on secondary IDE cable slot - mind you...that is using 1 IDE cable plugged on the board on the IDE 1 slot.
My Lightscribe DVD burner & CDRW Burner are both on another IDE cable in the same fashion on the IDE 2 slot. You only have to decide which drive you want on which cable slot ; since DVD burns BOTH DVD & CD, that would probably be best choice on primary IDE cable slot.

In the BIOS, set the settings to AUTO DETECT your IDE components/hardware. Once it has detected & recognized the DVD burner, save the settings & reboot

I'm not exactly sure why it's doing that, because we know it's an internal IDE drive. However, I can reassure you that a "driver" is not the reason, despite what the others here are telling you. Optical drives (CD-ROMs, DVD-ROMs, and burners) all use what is called "firmware" which is embedded on the drive. Windows simply reads this and does not require you to manually point it to a driver.

With that said, perhaps Windows is not fully installing what it thinks to be the correct driver. I like the other post above that suggests you remove it from Device Manager, reboot, and let Windows reinstall it (again). After this happens, don't make any changes like you've been trying, and just shutdown/reboot one more time. Hopefully after that it will stop! If not, it will probably just be a nagging nuisance but the drive will still work fine.

Since it's fairly new, you can also call HP.

If you have not already downloaded or installed the driver for the DVD burner do so. If you have, when the popup comes up go thru with the process or press cancel. Make sure that the burner is securely installed and plugged in. If this does not solve you problem go to the hp website and click on support, there is a live chat program which is free to use and I am sure they can help you with this problem.

Are you able to use the dvd burner? Is it reinstalling each time you restart or are you just getting that message. Make sure you have the cables secure. You might want to delete it after install the burner that is not the software and let it detect it again. Hope that helps.

I think that because the DVD writer has light scribe you will need a driver for it, while most optical drives do not need drivers. Nero is just burning software, so its not a driver.

You can find the lightscribe driver here.

Did you install the driver before you installed the burner? It is important. If you installed correctly, you should not be getting the wizard.

go to start, control panel, system, devices. click on your cd/dvd and uninstall it, then reboot your system let it find it again.

if you changed out your cdw for the new dvd then that could be the reason you did not delete the old cd/dvd rom

good luck
