Check for spyware. Both of these are free and safe to use.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

You should start by scanning for viruses, spyware, ad-aware etc. I would almost bet your system is bogged down by thing that were installed (without your knowledge) during the installation of a free screensaver or some other free program. these "free" thing are full of junk that track your browsing habits sends you pop-ups and deteriorate your system operation to a crawl. Just google for adaware/spyware removal programs (I use ad-aware from lavasoft but everyone has their own favorite software even though most software in this class will do the job) and go to trendmicro and download trend system cleaner and the latest virus definitions or use their housecall web based scanner and scan your system for viruses. You will be amazed what kind of garbage you find on your system. Good luck
