I've used several programs that deal with recovering lost files and the Excel file that I am looking for is indicated as "overwritten". Does that mean it's irretrievable?

Currently I have:
Pentium 4 CPU 1.8GHz
1.79 GHz, 256 MB of RAM
running Win XP

I work with Adobe CS and I'm bothered by slow applications and low virtual memory warnings. I'm guessing I need more RAM, but how much should I get? Is it something I can do on my own? I don't want to spend too much $$ cuz I'll be upgrading my system soon. Any suggestions/help will be much appreciated:)

Also, I've already increased my virtual memory setting to the max and I keep my HD relatively clean. The Dell support person actually told me to reintall XP and start over--seems rather drastic and unnecessary.

I just got a new expensive laptop because my comp is old and slow now, but i dont want to just throw this comp. away soo here are the specs:
HP desktop windows 2000(upgraded to XP)
64MB RAM
40GB hard drive
Celeron Processor

Well what im thinking about doing is upgrading the RAM to 512 which is like 45$ at best buy
This is just a family comp. and maybe just add a LCD screen
But what i wanted to know what will my Comp go faster then if i upgrade the RAM or is my celeron proccsoer too slow?
or should i just spend 350-400$ on a brand new desktop?

k, so i thought i'd buy a computer something like this, plz take a min and go through my question:

Processor Type AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 3800+
Processor Speed 2.0GHz
RAM 1GB PC3200 DDR2 SDRAM (Exp. To 4GB)
Hard Drive 250GB Serial ATA (7200RPM)
Graphics Card nVidia GeForce 6150LE 256MB
Cache 2MB L2
System Bus 200MHz
Available Expansion Slots 2 x PCI, 1 x PCI Express

then i'd put a ATI X1650Pro PCI-Express 512MB Video Card, and i'd then be good with games.

But when computer requirements say something like: 3.0Ghz Pentium 4 or equal......and my computer speed is listed 2.0Ghz, then doesnt that mean my computer doesnt meet the requirements? or is my computer speed like 4.0Ghz cuz its dual core....?

And if i want to upgrade my processor chip later, they can just take out the old one and replace it with new one, right?
And the same for the graphics card too, right?

I am trying to decide between intel core duo, pentium D 820, or Pentium 4 (524). I dont want to overspend on a processor that is too much for a basic home office computer but I don't want a slow computer either.

My PC has started to act up - it seems to be very slow and un responsive, and often, when i open up a new web page, it stalls and refuses to do anything, with the result that I have to manually switch it off and reboot. Does anybody have any idea whats up with the PC? I bought it in 2001.
