Easy decision - get the P4 and not the Pentium D.
The Pentium D runs much hotter being the first dual-core version that Intel released. It causes the other components in your PC to run hot too. Unless you have specific need for a dual-core, then a decent P4 will be just fine.
You should also look at the Athlon 64 or X2, which are pretty cheap and outclass the P4. Intel's newest Core 2 Duo leads the pack, however, but it's not cheap.

all you are decideing between are intels! all are much too basic for a home computer, and are over priced. try an amd. i would either go with an athlon 64 3800+, or a sempron 64. look for processors at newegg.com to see what your options are.
ps. for a faster computer, use the duo, for a slower more mid-range use the pentium d, and for a dinosaur use the p4

I am curious if you mean the Core2 Duo, since the Core Duo is a laptop-only chip. Core2 Duos are used in laptops and desktops. In any case, I would suggest the Core2 Duo, since this will be the standard from now on.
I would like you to consider AMD processors as well as they have proven to be just as trustworthy (if not more so) than their Intel counterparts. Plus, they almost always cost less. If they are good enough for Dell, they are good enough for you!

For basic home computing you don't need anything fancy. And whatever it is will be fine and fast. Unless you run graphics prorgrams or memory hog games then anything around $400 from bestbuy or even walmart will be fine.
