if your os is windows xp, and you insert the install cd, it will detect a previous verision of windows and ask if you want to install on top of it. It will also give you the option of deleting the existing partition on the hard drive and create a new one to install the os on. this will erase everything on the hard drive and in effect you'll be starting from scratch.

If you intend to use Rescue disks, insert them and answer yes to "Reformat the hard drive". This will save important info on a RAMDISK, or partition of the hard drive not being formatted. It will then reformat and reload your OS plus drivers. If you truly want to wipe the hard drive clean you need to repartition the drive first by deleting the existing partitions, then creating new ones. Be careful because this will wipe everything off and you may have difficulty repartitioning if you don't do it right. Once repartitioned, reload your OS and drivers. Be aware that if you intend to use the OS disk that came with your PC, the key code is probably on a partition on the hard drive and if deleted the OS is useless to you.

Do you have a Windows Disk? If you do format the computer type the command format:c/q then pop the disk in and go. Make sure you have the drivers to your computer! Copy them on a disk or something. For example. If you have a Dell go to the webpage and technical support then drivers. Find them save them then reload! Or you can restore your computer to the time you first got it! Start Menu, All Programs, Accesories, System Tools, System Restore. Use the calender and go to the earliest date that I will let you restore to. Then it will do the rest!

Based on your question and guessing your level of expertise, as an IT person I'm sure that , you're not going to succeed doing this yourself. If you bought it from a retail store , just take it to them, and they should in most cases able to do it. Otherwise, go to any computer repair place and take all that came with the computer (including CDs, manuals etc., ) and ask them to load everything to it.
If it is a well known brand like Dell, hp, or gateway, you can call their customer service and ask them for any service centers nearby and they might be able to help you.

Use the recovery disc that came with computer or if you have OS disk (Windows XP?) use it and follow instructions. You will have alot of updates to download. If OS is XP there is a update roll-up download that saves alot of time. Hope this helps.
