Make sure everything is plugged in correctly in the rear, especially the IDE cable. Also make sure that the jumper is set correctly too, it should say how to set it either in the manual or on the drive itself.

To install the DVD drive, unplug the computer, remove the access panel from the case, ground yourself to the metal frame of the computer case by grasping it. Then unplug the power cords and the IDE ribbons from both optical drives, remove the mounting screws form both drives and remove them from the case. Now, check on the back side of each drive and make sure that the jumper on the DVD drive is set to the "Master" position. Then check the jumper on the other optical drive and make sure it is set to the "Slave" position. Remount the drives in the case and re-attach all wiring and fire the computer up. There will be a balloon message in the tray on the desktop "Found New Hardware", let this message disappear, then the drivers for the optical drives will be loaded. The drives are now ready to use.

(OS Assumption) XP should recognize it and fire up hardware wizard. They you can load your driver if need be but Windows mostly likely have the drivers.

Are you sure you have the jumpers right, or the flat ribbon cable plugged in, or the 4 pin power connector plugged in?

Jumper setting is important....Main or slave. Look at the docs for that.

Its a guess, but you probably already have a cd rom installed when you added the dvd drive, if so here is probably your problem. Both drives are set to master drives. One of them has to be set to a slave. remove the dvd drive and on the end between the power connector and the data cable move the jumper to the slave position.

Do you have another drive installed if so did you move the jumper on your new drive to the secondary location? If you did those and still does not work you need to go to your bios and config that drive. To do that you must restart windows and when you are still at the black screen before windows boots up keep hiting the Delete key and that will bring you there then just nav to the boot up area and see if that drive is showing.
