A lot of people have given a lot of different ideas, but the real problem is quite simple, its an old computer. Remember computer years are like dog years, so its really like a 40 year old computer. You could add RAM or try some of the other things people suggested, but those are all just bandages, if you want a fast and responsive computer, you will need a new one.

After 20 years of working with these suckers...
1. Internet Explorer - change 'Internet Temporary Files' to 'every visit to the page - NOT AUTOMATICALY. Auto means to check every site you have visited all the time and kills the internet connection.
2. delete internet cookies and temp files.
3. Search out 'temp' directories on the hard drive and delete everything in them, but leave the 'temp' folder there.
4. I agree with other posters if this doesn't work. Delete unused stuff from ther hard drive((only if you know what it is and does) and uninstall unused programs) and defrag it.
5. Reformat and reload if #4 doesn't work. Make sure you have all the software you need first. Make sure it really formats - don't do a 'quick format. It should take half an hour just to format, more time to finish installs.
6. Do all Microsoft updates except IE7.
7. Put money into the system only if this doesn't work, Start with RAM, Harddrive next. If the total cost of RAM and a faster harddrive is more than a couple hundred bucks and you are not a do-it-yourselfer, skip it and buy a new pc.
8. Go back to pencil and paper before resorting to a MAC.
Good luck!

Could be a couple of things.
I would download Adaware from Lavasoft.com it is free and does a good job of removing any spyware. I would then do a disk clean up by going to "start" accessories disk clean up if you have not done this before it could take some time so be patient. I would check all the boxes once it is completed the scan and delete all the old files as it could be taking up memory. I would then do a disk defragment which is also in the accessories area.
If that does not work, I would look at adding more memory as you could have installed programs over the years that take up memory.
If none of that works I would get a new computer for any computer that is 5 years old is really old these days.

You can download ccleaner for free here: http://bit.ly/1Bk5V5C
First open CCleaner
Go to the Cleaner tab and you will be confronted by a very confusing lineup of checkboxes.
To make this brief, below is my recommended setup:
Under internet explorer check temporary internet files, cookies, and last download location. Most users don't really need this stuff. keep history and bookmarks unchecked, history is a maybe, but you don't want to lose bookmarked sites. You can normally leave Windows Explorer, System, and Advanced alone.
Run CCleaner and it will start deleting files.
afterward it will present you with a list of the files deleted, you really don't need to go through it as it will be several pages long.
The registry cleaner is recommended for slightly more advanced users. Use it after uninstalling programs as they will often leave behind incorrect registry entries.
If you decide to run Registry cleaner then review the items detected and always back up the registry (I keep a folder aside for this)
The Tools tab lets you uninstall programs and set startup programs. Why do you need this if Windows has all of these features? Especially with Vista Home Ed. The windows defender software explorer( startup programs) doesn't pick up some entries (however software explorer is easier to use).
Using CCleaner to uninstall programs and then check for leftover registry entries takes less time.
Under Options you can determine how CCleaner cleans your files. I leave this alone.

Hi, clear out history forms and files from both your Internet explorer and your default browser. Run spy-bot and ad-aware to see if you have any problems there. Run your cc cleaner which will get rid of temporary files and folders and cookies and last but not least make sure you don't have two anti-virus programmes on the go at the one one time 'cos that'll just slow you down ~ that was one of my mistakes. I hope this will help.
Best of luck I hope you don't have to PICK A WINDOW to throw your PC out of.

probably you're downloading too much stuff onto ur pc. or maybe it has a virus. try going under my computer and right-click on the local disk (c:), then click "properties." then u will c disk cleanup. click that. it will scan. then, select everything that it says on the screen. for example, recycle bin, temporary files, etc. then hit disk cleanup. it will cleanup the drive causing your pc to run a bit faster.

Disable unused startup programs?
I use the program "Chameleon Startup Manager" for it.
http://www.neosoft-tools.com/windows-startup-manager.htm
It disables any startup programs and fully controls startup by selecting the programs to be launched, while customizing the startup settings (ie how often and when programs should be launched, etc).

If you can't afford to upgrade it, I would recommend formatting your harddrive and re-installing your operating system. Also, try going to this site and download this free virus scanner, upgrade it and do a full scan on your computer.
