Thats a wide subject....

It could be anything from a bad wire to a bad hard drive to your cpu overheating to a bad power supply.

If the computer beeps any, the beeps mean what is particulary wrong. Look it up

Don't bother with Win 98 anymore. Upgrade to Windows XP. Win 98 is far too unstable and no longer supported by Microsoft. However, if that is not an option, use the Win 98 boot floppy disk and at the command prompt type FDISK/MBR that will repair the master boot record for Win 98.

Do the mem test thing that others suggested, there is also a better way and longer way to fix if hardware is causing the issue: take out parts and replace with functionable parts.

Windows setup failing (no matter what version of Windows you are installing) is a sign of hardware failure most likely RAM. Try using docmemory (www.simmtester.com) to check if the RAM is faulty.

BTW Don't let anybody pressure you into XP if you don't like it or if computer isn't fast enough.
