An HP Pavillion 500 (3 years old ? neighbor's machine - I'm asked to be the expert). While the monitor works enough to complain that it isn't getting input, the computer doesn't light up or do anything. Broken switch ?
I vaguely recalled that the computer battery has to be good. So I pulled it and told them to get it tested. Is there any truth to the idea that the battery can stop the rest of the computer from working ?
If not, then is there a simple step by step for me to try to isolate. I'm guessing that the power supply is fried. And I suppose the next step would be to check Craigslist to see if there's another HP Pavillion 500 for sale for $10 so that I could try to borrow its power
supply, but I don't know if all the connectors are easy to work with.
Still, if they are, then swapping in a power supply would be the next step, right ? And then, other people have mentioned that after that they find something is fried anyway. But that's luck right ?

thanks
Charlie

the battery like the other person said wouldn't stop the computer from working. You can go to some place like staples best buy or any place like that and get a cheap PSU if that doesn't fix it than your mobo is fried ar you have some thing grounding it.try to take the mobo out if the PSU doesn't fix it and check to see if there is any thing under it that would ground it(a screw)you could have a blow cap check to see if any of the caps look like this http://images.fbrtech.com/miscellany/100_0062,if any of them looks like that than you can get new caps and solder them on to the board in the place of the old ones.if none of this works you need a new board or a new computer.it also could be your CPU if you have another one that is the same socket as that try changing it with one that you don't use.if your board is bad you could also fry your CPU that is why you would want to use an extra one that you don't have to have if it doesn't work.the PSU is vary easy to change but if that doesn't fix it check all of the above steps.

Check the output from the power supply before investing in another supply. HP`s had a nasty habit of the power supply plug that is in the computer coming loose/breaking off and not making good contact.
Also..they have know to have bad on/off switches. (jump across the switch momentairaly to see if the unit turns on after checking power supply)

hi charlie

1st of all I would like to tell you that it cant be the CMOS battery that can cause this.

Open the cabinet and check if the cables from SMPS ( PSU - power supply unit ) are connected properly to Motherboard. RAM is properlly installed.
Just try to reset these cables once, If this does'nt help than just get the Tower checked at a technician cos you would need a multimeter to check if power is coming or the SMPS is Bad.

A CMOS Battery Mainly holds Boot info and some time details; If the Main PC was still live you would be prompted to enter date, time and some other info again. Might be easier to get the drive out and recover info from the drive as a second unit. A "new" power unit may be just a waste of time.

Your machine is so old I can't even find it on the HP site. Is it a desktop or a laptop? If it is a laptop, the battery would not necesarily need to be good. Just plug it in to AC power. If it doesn't boot, it could be many things.

my compaq computer just stopped working, and was having problems for months prior to this, and finally would not turn on, I had my son whom is a computer tech take it home to test it, I thought it was my hard drive going out, but mine was nine capacitors on the motherboard burned out, exploded, erupted all over, also took out the processor. So it could be any number of things wrong with this. It probally needs to be tested..

If the computer won't turn on at all it could be the power switch itself or it could be the ps. I would recommend purchasing a new ps and see if that helps.
