When I close down Windows, I usually put it on "Standby", but before i do, a meesage comes on that says I can put it in "hybernation" if I hold down the shift key. I haven't done that because I don't know what hybernation does, or more importantly how to stop it if I were to start it.
Does anyone use this feature? If so, what is it and how to restart my computer once I want to use it again?

Well hybernation mode is just the big brother of stand by.
In standby mode the system shuts the monitor and the hard disk but is still on power but in the hybernation mode the system dumps the contents of your ram on the hard disk (the file it stores the content is called hyberfill.sys) and then initiates a shutdown of the system . Next time when you start the system the windows reloads the dump from hard disk and the system starts right from where you left it .

If you are using Windows XP, you should be fine, but there are some problems associated with Windows 98 or Me, which aren't as stable as Windows XP. Windows 98 and Me users who wish to use either hibernation or standby as a regular procedure should do a full restart every week or so.

To enable hibernation:
1. Click on START.
2. Move to Settings--click on CONTROL PANEL.
3. Double-Click on POWER OPTIONS.
4. Click the Hibernate tab, and then select the Enable hibernate support check box.
(If the Hibernate tab is not available, your computer does not support this feature.)
5. Click OK to close the Power Options dialog box.
6. Click Start, and then click Turn Off Computer.
7. In the Turn Off Computer dialog box, click Hibernate.

Hybernation is a power saving mode. It basically copies your entire session to the hard drive, then shuts down the monitor, hard drives, everything and goes to sleep to save power. When you exit hybernation, it restores whatever you were doing and "wakes up." It sometimes takes a while.

When your computer hibernates, it stores whatever it has in memory on your hard disk and then shuts down When your computer returns/comes out of hibernation, it returns to its previous state.
It is somewhat similar to standby mode but hibernate mode is more useful b'coz after hibernation you can shut your computer down and switch on some other time and you still have the similar settings/work which you are doing before

standby the computer waits for you, with info in RAM, and hibernation it stores info to hard drive , in case of power loss so you don't lose info, then it waits for you.

Try it out. It's supposed to just wake like you left it.
