My mom's planning to buy a desktop for us. She left the task of choosing the best high-end desktop to me. However, I'm still concern about the price and I don't want her ending up shocked about it.

Well, to be more specific...Which do you think is better here?

A. Gateway GM5266E Minitower
Intel Viiv Technology, Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6400, 2.13GHz, 2GB RAM, 320GB Hard Drive, 16X DVD+/-RW Drive, Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005

or

B. HP Pavilion m7640n TV Minitower
AMD LIVE Technology, AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ 2.6GHz Processor, 2GB RAM, 320GB Hard Drive, 16X DVD+/-RW Drive, Windows XP Media Center 2005

If you could give the good and the bad of an HP and Gateway and the AMD and the Intel, it would really help.

Thank you so much.

Wow I can't believe some of the stuff that has been written so far, I don't even know where to begin. Both Intel and AMD are reliable, both of these chips are 64-bit and dual-core, the guy who just compared clock speeds is apparantly still living in 2002. If they are the same price, go with A because it is slightly faster. I have to ask if you have something against Dell because I am fairly confident that they could offer you something that would be a better deal than either of these. HP is generally good but a bit overpriced, Gateway is not high quality.

To be honest, I am an AMD fan/user myself. I have always been proud of the fact that the AMD chips were faster than their Intel counterpart. So when Intel came out with the Core Duo... I was surprised that they were able to beat the current AMD lineup. By "current" I mean what AMD has available in retail right now. So if you are planning to build your rig now or in the near future, I hate to admit it but Intel is tops right now. Me, I am waiting for what AMD is coming out with as a response to Intel's Core Duo. Basing on past trends, AMD is always able to come up with something better... (I do hope that that will still be the case this time around). At any rate, if what AMD comes up with is inferior to Intel's, then I can make the switch. So I will wait.

Because if you drop the two out the window at the same time that one hits the ground faster

In a lot of tests between the AMD AM2 and Intel Core 2 Duo the Intel Core 2 Duo out performed the AMD AM2 Cores.

I've not heared a lot of good things about Gateway PC's however the CPU is better and it will last you for years to come.

Personally and that is me and i would rather the Intel as i have using Intel for a lot of years now and so i intend on sticking to Intel

It all comes down to what you are wanting to do on the computer

There is no straight answer, either one will be faster for a given scenario. I recommend choice A because 64 bit computing is kinda unnecessary for the average user, and a dual core machine rocks.

AMD is actually the more reliable as Intel has had cpu recalls (twice). As in speed in programs, it's the Intel core2 cpu that is faster, and runs a little cooler. In games, not much difference as games require the video card to be very good instead.
Goto www.tomshardware.com for benchmarks and reviews about cpus. Always look for reviews and guides about products, it always helps out.

as they are both dual core i would go with the amd, it gives you 2.6 ghz compared to the 2.13 ghz of the intel and the ram is the same on both as are the hard drives, it would be the faster of the two

Intel's proccesors are more reliable than AMD but, 2.13 GHz is slower than the 2.16..but you have 2 gb of ram so you a few ghz wont really matter. I would pick computer A.

I would go with the AMD.

However since nothing atm uses dual core, either one would be ok.
