I am planning on purchasing a computer for my grandma who wants a computer. I am thinking about a Mac because the mouse only has one button, which I think would be less confusing for her. However, which interface would be better and easier for her? Explain.

She would use it for word processing, e-mail, and surfing the web.

This depends on how she wants to use it. If it is just for e-mail and web surfing, a Mac is a great choice. If she wants to install programs, make sure the programs she needs are available for the Mac, or you could also run them through BootCamp (Win emulator for the Mac). Another choice would be an internet appliance which would allow her to just do e-mail and web. Some even display directly through the TV (like WebTV), which is an easier transition for a lot of seniors.

As much as I hate to say it A PC would be a better choice. There is more software available for PC running windows. If it breaks there is more help available for her. Properly setup the PC can be made simple enough to be run by anyone. I support a number of older folks and I just setup the Icons on the desktop of the most popular things they do like mail, Internet, and work processing. My one guy had his Bible verse stuff on the desktop too. Find someone that knows about PCs and is patient with seasoned citizens and that will be a great help.

for a senior citizen the IBM based pc is good. thats because the IBM PC is simpler than the MAC. a person could go mad operating the both. as the keys and operation is a mirror image.
the MAC is fantastically fast and complex in operations, though they were the first to create a thing as PC, due respects, the IBM PC is more user friendly with WIndows as the operating sytem. and an elderly person can really really learn that fast. once explained proerly . join a beginer crash course and get started with it. ...

My parents are senior citizens and both use PCs. They primarily use it for email, IM, browsing the web, and using Word. Macs don't really make these any easier to use than PCs. Plus, they have a bigger support base for any computer questions, like church members, neighbors, etc.

Trust me, the only button mouse is a drawback for everybody. It's less difficult to correct-click on than preserving the apple button and left click on. If she could use it JUST for phrase processing, e mail, and browsing the internet, it could be a bigger suggestion to shop for a PC in view that it is not pricey just like the Mac. You'd simplest pay for a Mac should you'd wish to do extra complex stuff. Can't manage to pay for Microsoft Word? No main issue, simply down load and set up the loose phrase processor "OpenOffice", and you are performed. And whoever the dick-head is that down-thumbed me is absolutely obsessive about Macs.

I think the Mac would be easier.
Its more user friendly, and less problems. Dont have to worry as much about virus' etc., if she will be using the web.
No drivers to install, etc.
Its pretty much take it out of the box, hook it up to a phone line, and away she goes.

But thats from Mac user, Im sure you'll get PC users telling you the same thing.

i think a mac would be better. I have a mac and it is very easy to use. Everything is right in front of you as opposed to having to look for it in search menus.
