I now realize after just having our second how neurotic we were with our first. We would panic if he made a peep and gave him everything he wanted. I see parents act like that and want to tell them to relax! I think my second one will benefit more from learning to be patient and more disciplined and independent. Does anyone agree and did you experience the same thing?

I live in the outer Wigan area, have 4 children, no family nearby and none of my friends have time to babysit. (and those friends don't have any teenagers to babysit either).

I consequently never go out .. except to do the food shopping when the kids are at school.

Hi, well here is the story in about as condensed form as I can give. My sister’s former husband decided family life was not for him and moved on to woman half his age etc…the usual stereotype. His recent string of relationships has finally landed him into living with a “lady” two kids and they now live happily ever after in the same situation he left my sister to escape from. Go figure! Oh well to each his own. Now I have filled in as caretaker of home, picking nieces up, school functions and general role model. I love my sister and my nieces and will do whatever is necessary to have them all happy.

Now my problem. My 10 year niece is coming home and comparing her father’s girlfriend to my sister. My sister not only provides 99% of the financial support but 90% of the time as well to these girls. She also happens to have MS and is on a weekly medications that do make her retain weight and tires her out. Making a 10 year understand this has been difficult. So when my niece comes home with comments like why do wear granny underwear, you wear old people clothes, I want to get a g-string , and we don’t do that over at Daddy’s house it can be rather hurtful.

I guess I could ignore this and let our good upbringing prevail however I’m concerned that the outside influence of a drug using, floozy dressing other woman will give my nieces the wrong views on how to grow up to be true ladies. Should I explain it to her, talk to the ex-brother in law or just keep on providing a good role model and hope for the best?

I want to give my husband a surprise 50th birthday party in the fellowship hall of our church. There is limited seating area and so I want to tell people not to bring their children. How should I go about doing this without stepping on toes? There's simple not enough room for all the adults and their children. (not to mention they are a distraction) I do not want to have to plan [seating, food, and intertainment] for a bunch of kids.
What should I do?

Even though I do get somewhat unorganized, I try to really plan out and holidays or special occasions, and to do it myself, but sometimes I need a little help from my husband. Well, to see and hear him, you would think I asked him to do all the work. Even during the last hour, before we are leaving the house, if I ask him to help me, whether it is getting my daughter dressed, mix something in a bowl, or find something for me, he either complains and critisizes me "WHY DIDN'T YOU TAKE CARE OF THAT ALREADY?"or"WHY ARE YOU ALWAYS RUNNING BEHIND?" Or he will throw his hands in the air and curse "G_ _ DAM_!!!!" Or if we are going to my brothers house for something, he will say "I am going to go ahead and go down to Chris's." and will leave real quick. (Brother lives 2 blocks away) I always end up so frustrated with him, that I don't even want to enclude him in these family get togethers. I would rather him just stay home. How do I get him to understand what he is doing to me?

Thats whats wrong with this nation. If a parent disciplines their kid in public, they risk having the cops called on them. This is totally retarded. What happened to this country? Just because Oprah or some idiot says "time out" is better?

Haven't you ever heard the saying "spare the rod and spoil the child"? Well, it's true!

My inlaws think we live a shabby life, our home might not be a better home and garden house, but it's our first one, They never come over and give us money sometimes. My husband makes more than 4,000 a month?! Why do they keep on giving us money and clothes for the children. I dress up to go out, I have a nice car, my children wear name brands and I'm confused, they make us feel sorry...for ourselves? I was raised to be good and polite in society and good hygeine is important to me. My hair is nice and perfect..sometimes, but I'm a mom of two and have a busy lifestyle. Why do they think we need money? I keep track of the money and where it goes, so nothing is going on being my back. What's going on that they think we live in poverty. Their house was smaller than ours until it got flooded out and they built a nicer one. I don't know.

I want to make a dish for Thanksgiving, but my family didn't seem polite and said I'm too busy, I'm not that busy that I can't stop and make a pie. It's my first holiday with my two children and I would like to make something that my 2 yr old and 7 month old would eat. I want a dish that my children will fall in love with. I'm a good cook, but not a chef. It's like they refuse to let me bring in something.

My cousin (5yrs) has been living with my family for the past two years. I've recently found out that my aunt is really trying to get him back. While I know she loves him just as much as we do I feel we do have the best situation for him. I'm planning on flying up to see my family (they live in Ohio--our family lives in Florida) soon--before next month. When I go I would like to talk to my aunt about keeping my cousin and possibly finally adopting him. I don't know how to approach the subject though--as you can probably tell it's touchy for both of us. How do I discuss this with her without hurting her feelings or making things worse?
