It's possible that he's ill. The change of seasons affect some people (our family included) and he could be feeling sick from it. (That is, if you're in an area where you feel the seasons changing.)
It's also possible that he's having a growth spurt. How much is he eating these days? Is he complaining of any pain? During a growth spurt a person will eat and sleep more then normal. I believe this is true for any age. My sons went through this when they became teenagers and my younger daugther eats and sleeps more when going through a spurt (she's 10 months old).
Ask him how he's feeling. You could also give his doctor a call. If you believe that there is something wrong it can't hurt to call a doctor. After all, part of your doctor's job is to listen to your concerns and address them.
Good luck and I hope it's nothing more than a growth spurt!

I am sure he was just tired, sometimes kids sleep a really long time. I wouldn't worry unless it starts happening every day, then take him to the doctor. But once in a while is nothing to get in a twist over, he probably just wore himself out that day or didn't sleep enough the night before. Also, kids need much more sleep than adults. Adults need 6-8 hours, but kids need anywhere from 8-12, depending on age.

When I was younger, I loved sleeping for 12 hours at a time. When a person sleeps, that's when all their bones and organs grow, I guess that's why I'm so tall...lol. Now that I'm an adult with wife and kids, I hardly have the time to sleep....I'd love to sleep like that again.
When I was about 16, I remember when I was coming down with a cold, I didn't get much sleep the night before and I took a Sudafed that makes you drowsey. I ended up sleeping for about 16 hours.

He was probably just tired. Or maybe coming down with a cold or something. If he's a couch potato, get his butt off the couch and outside! If it becomes chronic, though, have him checked out. Could be depressed or starved for social interactions with other kids his age. It must be hard for home-schooled kids to fit in with other children, that's gotta be hard on him.

Could it be that he was tired?
How old is he? How active is he? How much sleep has he had for the last few days? How has his health been recently - any colds, etc? All of these could mean that he needed some extra sleep, and last night was the time he got it.

Thank your lucky stars he slept that long!!!!!! I dont think it is anything unless he does this on a regular basis. Even then, it is probab;y nothing. How old is your son???? He may just be worn out. There are times that my children will sleep like that, and it is just because they are trying to play catch up on sleep.

Unless he has been sleep deprived for a few nights or sick you may want to keep a eye on it to see if he contuniues to do this often..once in a while is common for kids.often I would suspect something is going on....even drugs...keep an eye on it

children need much more sleep than adults - up to 10-12 hours due to their body growing, etc
this is still true of teenages - they are expected to lead more adult lives (adults don't need so much sleep) but are still go through massive changes in their biology, and require large amounts of sleep.

Can you add some details? How old is he? Has he been feeling ill? Does he do this all the time or was it just this once?
