First of all, "spare the rod, spoil the child" was never a good rule of thumb. Fear is never a good teacher. People just look for a way to commit the same crime without getting caught.
While you may say that you are a good and moral individual, I have no way of verifying that statement. What you consider good is to hit children. That act of violence is much less effective than the "time out".
Most children who are hit repeat the same crime many times. They learn from the immediate blow to be more sneaky about how the commit the crime. Is that really a good lesson?
You always learn more from sitting and thinking about how if you had not done something you would be free than by receiving a blow. Being hit is both a negative physical and emotional experience, but it is not related to what you did wrong. Being put in a chair and told to stay there is boring and your mind quickly reverts to the last activity you had. When you have time to think about what you did, you normally realize it was wrong.
Learning is about thinking and not about an immediate blow. It has been shown with both rats and people that given time to think things out, learning will greatly exceed any immediate expectation. Would you rather learn something for life or just find a way to repeat the same crime without getting caught?
Take care,
Troy

I don't agree with beating a child, but spanking has been a form of dicipline that has been misguided. If a child thinks he's going to be punished for doing something wrong, he's more likely to think about what they are doing. But I see these kids, 2,3,4 slaping ,kicking spitting at their parents and even I want to smash them. Parents today want to be friends with their children. Some have either waited so long to have children that their to old or to tired to dicipline them.. Children want structure, they can't just be set loose and say here do what you want.. The biggest problem I have with parents is idol threats.. If your kid knows when you say "don't do that or" and you never follow through with what the consequences will be, Honey you've lost the power right there.. I spanked my kids when they got out of hand, I punished them, not by taking a toy away, but by taking what they really like away.. A good way is to wait for the punishment. It may take a week, but something will come up that your kid really wants to do, Then you hit him with it, "hey remember tuesday, when you sassed me back ? Well guess what what ? Your not going to Johnny's house to play, you can sit in your room and think about your behavior, and maybe next time you'll have a little more respect, that behavior will not be tollerated in this house. The point is follow through .

No parent should ever be allowed to "beat" their child under any circumstance. Battered children and women cannot be acceptable in this country under any circumstances.
To spank or tweak the ear of a child for bad behavior is another matter.
The liberal courts have equated spanking and beating. The courts then self-empowered themselves to be th protectorate of ANY child in these circumstances. The reality is that government has now taken control over this part of family life and development.
Thank the courts and thank the liberals for fostering the creation of a nation of under 30 year old citizens, brought up without discipline for authority, who now lack moral values or respect for anything or anybody, except perhaps their iPod digi gods,
Beating children and women is never the solution, though, never.

Well I agree with a swat on the *** when they wont listen but beatings can go to far. I was beat as a child and I didnt deserve it half the time. Spankings are a good way to make your child mind just some parents hit too hard and thats when cops started stepping in and saying everything you do is bad now. Its rediculous cause time outs DONT work.

If you want serious responses to your question, don't use the word "beat" unless you want people to think you leave you child covered in black and blue marks after you "beat" them. Anyone who does this is scum, PERIOD.
It sounds like the above mentioned is not you so-
Try the word "spank"
I agree with you. If you were to spank your kids in public, yes there is a good chance of the cops showing up. Since it's very legal to spank your kids, there's not much they will do to you, unless you beat the crap out of them. But your guaranteed some uneducated person calling the cops.
Now days I recommend spanking in privet only.

It's not against the law to spank a child as long as it is on their buttocks with an open hand. Any other way is considered abuse.
I agree too many kids these days don't get disciplined and a lot of parents are blaming their behavior on ADD or ADHD.
I believe in spanking but only on their buttocks. My kids are pretty decent kids and they are doing great in school and everything else they do. They rarely even get spankings anymore.

Your question carries 100 marks, as kids get well groomed if they have fear that they get punished, not like this, they know if parents raise eye brows then they call 911. But beating is not the option. I believe there is difference in, fear of obey and obeying in respect. There is saying" Give them in the bowls of gold but watch them like lions eye"
You must have friendship and respect with kids they they know,if they do something, they might lose the love and attention of their loved ones. Secondly, I am in a favor of little spanking from mother side, not from father, as mother love more, so kid not gets out of control. Best example of couple is Maria and Arnold and their kids. She has great control and kids have obeying respect of father

They don't do it as much anymore cuz dumb politicians passed laws saying they couldn't or it would be child abuse. Then they wonder why youth crime is on the rise. You hear about more rapes and murders and missing kids now then you ever have and the people who are doing those crimes are the first group of kids that started getting time outs. I would dare my kids to call the cops on me cuz i spanked them. America is becoming the land of the *******. Everyone is protected so much, only the innocent are punished.

i am all for discipline and children do need a smack from time to time. but not on your scale! i was severely beaten by my mother whilst growing up and yes i didnt get into trouble, do drugs, or anything like that. and it hasnt done me any harm either, sometimes kids nowadays do get away with to much, but there is discipline and then theres child abuse, which my mother would be in jail for now if i was young again.

Yes, you are right, I even heard that all parents spank their kids after they step in a plane going out of America!!!!! really, it is true, parents cannot discipline their children any more, I don't mean beating the hell out of them but a little spank should do.
