I just obtained a bunch of convict cichlids and I am frantic about how to care for them. They're in pretty bad shape as far as care goes.
How should I prepare their tank/aquarium? What about water temperature? Gravel? Other factors?

Please hurry and answer!
Thanks!

Why would he stay up there all the time?
I have 3 other fish along in the tank which are:
Angel fish
Dragon fish
and a Black Moor...
Do you have any suggestion on what i could do to prevent this?
If this was happening to you what would you do?

I have raised fish for 30 years. If you will get a good under gravel system with power heads and a piggy back filter optional you will have very little problems. Do a 25% water change and add salt once a month and most importantly do not over feed. That is where the biggest problem starts. For about $125.00 you can get a diatom system to cycle and clean the tank and it puts the water back in the tank after going through the filter sand. I do this about every 2 months . I break down my tanks about every 2 years. If you will set your heaters to 82 degrees most diseases can not live in that tempature. Also the bigger the tank the easier it is to take care of.

I have a female betta whom, I believe, is about to kick the bucket. I hate watching anything die, she doesn't eat anymore and I often find her floating upside down or at the top on her side, then she swims a round and hides. This has been going on for about 3 days now. Do I just let her continue and let nature play it's role...? Her tank is clean and filtered.

I heard of some kind of bone or something they can eat to strengthen their shell, or some calcium? I don't know, anyone wanna help me out?

Please no criticism, I've had the snails in the same tank for some times now, I don't want anyone saying they will over run your tank because that is not true. All I have is a male Betta in the tank.

I have a 55 gallon tank with very few fish in it (a pleco currently and I want to add community fish like mollies, tetras, platys, etc.). I have not been replacing the filters as I should have been (did not know to) and now my nitrate and ammonia levels are spiked off the charts.

Currently, I have an Aquatech 30-60 filter with no bio wheels. Will one of the newer filters benefit my tank, or should I wait it out and keep adding the water enhancers (loose carbon in bags and AmQuel +)? I don't want to buy filter cartridges for this filter if it is not going to help much.

Possibly not important history: I went to PetSmart last night to test the water and, when the levels were high, the sales girl said that I needed to add the above listed chemicals and replace the filter to a filter that they stock for $150.00. I don't have the kind of money to put into the tank, so I asked last night (on Yahoo questions) if a cheaper filter would work. But now, I know the filter I have...

I'm faily new to the saltwater tank game and I bought some live rock with an little aiptasia animone hiding on it, and my mom is acctually the one taking care of the tank. I moved away to college and tanks this large aren't allowed at my place. Anyway, now my entire tank is covered in the things. I was going to try peppermint shrimp, but I have a yellow wrasse and apparently there is a pretty good chance he will eat them, and I tried a butterfly fish, but my tanks water apparently isn't in the best condition, so it died...I've heard you can use lemon juice and inject each plant individually, but there are so many Aiptasia in there such a task sounds pretty daunting, and wouldn't lemon juice seriously contaminate your water?

I currently have a 20 gallon freshwater with 5 neons and 3 ottos. They are doing fine but the plants I have aren't. I have two Amazon Swordplants, 2 hornworts, and one Anacharis Plant. The swordplants leaves grow back brownish and see through. The hornworts leaves pollute the tank and the poor fish hate it. Is it ok to switch back to fake plants? Ok, second question, Can a 10 gallon be a saltwater tank? I am looking into converting my 10 gal into a SW. THe only things in there would be ONE Royal Gramma and some shrimp. Do I have to have live rock? Can you use plastic rocks and fake plants in a SW tank? Thanks!

HI, my father has/had lots of fish, mainly guppies and catfish and other i dont know their name. However, my father changed their water ( he knows the proceedure since he alway had an aquarium and these fish lasted for 3 yrs) and all of a sudden they started dying...one by one.. hmm no, 5 by 5 :\. Could it be the heat of the water? it never happen that the water was a bit hot. i dont think they had a disease since they didnt have any spots or something. i dont know :( we got the survivors and put them in another aquairum but they are also dying :( pls give me guidlines!!

Okay I have about a 1 1/2" black fancy goldfish & he lives in a very clean 10 gallon tank my question is this.....I came home today & my sons friend had given him a very small(about 1/2" total length) juvenile chiclid & its in teh tank w Jaws(our goldfish) .they seem to fine..no aggression or stress....my question is will they be able to live together peacefully at least untill they are both bigger & we have to upgrade the tank size to accomadate? Mind you they are both quite small & seem to gettin on fine Im just wanting to make sure this will be an alright situation? No smart *** remarks "please" I take very good care of my pets but I wasnt expecting this adition & am asking to be sure they will be happy & healthy.

We just set up a new 20 gallon tank and put 3 platys in it to establish it. So far, for the first couple days, they have been very timid and hide behind anything they can. They are so timid that they are reluctant to come out to eat. Is this normal for fish in a new tank or should we be worried?

I have a 100+ gallon tank (I think it's a 150 but not sure). Anyway I have quite a few different species in there, such as an angel fish, pleco, guarmies (sp?), Chinese suckers, a school of various tetra, a dragon fish (gobi), some snails, a small eel, peacock fish, a couple of cat fish, silver dollar, and I'm losing count.

So far everyone seems to be getting along, (except for one obnoxious guarmi). The tank has been set up for several months now and everyone is getting big and no strange deaths or anything.

I am curious what fish combinations you've put together before and it just hasn't worked? Any fish out there that seems particularly mean to the others? Or combinations that shouldn't have worked but did?

This is the second time I've kept a large aquarium and it's always seemed to me that if I start the fish out together (when they're small), they get along OK. Just my experience.
