Use bleach at one cup per ten gallons of water. Keep the filter running so every nook and cranny is disinfected. Leave the decorations in the tank. Let it run this way for 24 hours. The decorations will be fine, lay them on their side so the bleach can reach all the way inside them and kill any nasties left in there. Stir the gravel or sand a few times (all over the bottom) so it cannot harbor any germs, virus or spores.

Drain and rinse out at least 2-3 times using double dechlorinator (bleach=chlorine) each time. Finally, set up with fresh water and let run at least 24 hours before you attempt to cycle it with either fish or the fishless cycle method.

This is the procedure I have used in the past for tanks that have become infected and I have never had a reinfection.

I now use a hospital/quarantine tank for new fish so there is no chance of a new fish bringing in something that will kill the fish in my community/species tanks. Leave new fish in the hospital/quarantine tank for at least 10-14 days so anything they might be infected with will present itself and you can stop it before it kills all your fish.

Never buy fish from a tank that has sick or dead fish in it. Ask to see the fish eat before you buy them. Sick fish, many times, will not eat if they are in advanced stages of illness. Look at all tanks in the store, how do they take care of their fish? Clean bottoms, free of algae, fish active, fins erect, swimming smoothly (not waggling)? These are all signs of healthy fish and a good maintenance program.

I don't recommend using bleach. Any residue left in the tank will kill any new fish put in the tank. Same goes for soap.

Instead, fill the tank (decorations included, if any) with hot water and leave for a couple of hours. Add about a tablespoon of aquarium salt per gallon if you can (not necessary, just a precaution). Then fill the tank with a mixture of 1 part vinegar to 3 parts water. Leave it overnight, then rinse out. The vinegar should wash right out without leaving any residue. Sun the tank for two days.

The best is free, sit the tank in direct sunlight for 3 days. Done. Bad bacteria dead. It is also safe to clean with 2% hydrogen peroxide or a very salty water. Do not use bleach no matter what these fools tell you. Its too hard to make sure its gone and could cause massive problems when trying to get the tank to cycle the next time.

Actually, the Bible doesn't state that only things that have blood have life. It states that people who worshipped God were not to eat the blood of animals, as "the life is in the blood". This was given as a rule because many pagan societies did eat the blood of various animals to try to gain their strengths or attributes - God wanted his people to stay away from pagan rituals. Their strength was to be given by him. This section was for food laws...the people of that day didn't eat plants, fungi, algae, bacteria, and viruses as parts of pagan rituals. Therefore, God didn't include a biology lesson on botany and microbiology. :) If you look a little further though, you'll see where he warned against contagions and contagious diseases (quarantining people for what we now know to be the life span of the contagion), talking about how plants grow and die (just like other living things), and other passages that match what we know today about science. The people of that day simply didn't have a need to know that.

Empty and dry tank? Bleachy water and air dry. Give it a good soaking and scrubbing. Then dry completely. Make sure to switch out all tank accessories and gravel....for sure!

Ditto to 8 in the corner, bleach is a very effective anticeptic and anti parasitic agent.
