I have a 100+ gallon tank (I think it's a 150 but not sure). Anyway I have quite a few different species in there, such as an angel fish, pleco, guarmies (sp?), Chinese suckers, a school of various tetra, a dragon fish (gobi), some snails, a small eel, peacock fish, a couple of cat fish, silver dollar, and I'm losing count.

So far everyone seems to be getting along, (except for one obnoxious guarmi). The tank has been set up for several months now and everyone is getting big and no strange deaths or anything.

I am curious what fish combinations you've put together before and it just hasn't worked? Any fish out there that seems particularly mean to the others? Or combinations that shouldn't have worked but did?

This is the second time I've kept a large aquarium and it's always seemed to me that if I start the fish out together (when they're small), they get along OK. Just my experience.

The only fish I see you have listed that might have some issues would be the angel's. As they grow sometimes others particularly tetra's like to fin nip them, however being in such a large tank you might not have any issues. I too think starting them out together is better but you will always run across an occasional fish no matter what species they are that's a little more on the aggressive side. Even a gold fish can be this way. It might be that you'll have to get rid of the guarmi if it becomes a problem.

The Gobi should not be doing as well as you say it is... it is a brackish water fish (brackish is where freshwater rivers meet the salty seas), but you have it in a freshwater tank, it will live, but it would prefer some saltier water. If you have a friend with a brackish tank and some room, you might want to give the Gobi to them. If you really want to keep it, I guess it couldn't be that bad. Watch out for the Gouramis and the Angelfish being aggressive towards each other, they won't like the others' long fins. You should probably get a few more Silver Dollars because they are very social fish...

The thing with Angelfish is they are very sensitive and since gouramis tend to be pushy they can upset the angels, also with fish like that they get pretty big and will start to pick on each other, I have 100 gallon tank with a couple catfish, a brown knife fish, a needlefish, a couple african sicklets (sp?), two plecos, a leaf fish, a mono, and two gouramis (i think that's it). All my fish are about the same aggressive level so they get along ok but there are still some occassional injuries when they get hungry and fussy

I'd be careful of cichlids. We had a 2 red tiger oscars and they took a while to get together ok, but eventually they were fine.
also we had a really nice large tank with a plecco, some salmon tail catfish, a huge yabbie and some other fish...
in salt water, i dont suggest getting a harliquin tusk fish unless you want a very quiet tank.... and dont put him with a shark. lol
