I currently have a 20 gallon freshwater with 5 neons and 3 ottos. They are doing fine but the plants I have aren't. I have two Amazon Swordplants, 2 hornworts, and one Anacharis Plant. The swordplants leaves grow back brownish and see through. The hornworts leaves pollute the tank and the poor fish hate it. Is it ok to switch back to fake plants? Ok, second question, Can a 10 gallon be a saltwater tank? I am looking into converting my 10 gal into a SW. THe only things in there would be ONE Royal Gramma and some shrimp. Do I have to have live rock? Can you use plastic rocks and fake plants in a SW tank? Thanks!

You can have fake plants in both tanks...that seems to be your question for both tanks, from what I understand.

If you want to keep live plants in your 20 gal. then you can take the hornworts out and find something else. You can also use a fertilizer to help the sick plants, but be careful with how much you add or you will have a tank full of algae. Also check your lighting and make sure it is condusive to the kinds of plants you have. Some plants like high light and some low....

For the salt water, from what I understand from my friends who have one...you will need a live rock. This has something to do with the bacteria needed for the tank to thrive. I would check with others on that as well. I know they needed it for the corral and such that they had in their tank. You can also use plastic and fake to finish off the look......

Good luck!

I would suggest to take the hornwort out and add fertilizer such as FloraPride to hlp the other plants grow. You could swap the hornwort for a fake hornwort plant.

Yes, a 10 gallon could be a saltwater tank. Live rock will hold bacteria and other organisms that help in the nitrogen cycle. The only fake plants you could use in there are fake saltwater plants. Fake freshwater plants wouldn't look that good in a saltwater tank.

For the 20 gallon tank, you probably need more fish waste than your little fish are providing, so you should either by some more fish, maybe 3 Corries, or you could get some water fertilizer from the pet store. The fertilizer is only needed when your fish don't make enough natural fertilizer. So as a summary, either get some more fish, or get some fertilizer, you don't need both. If you really want, you could go back to fake plants, but the fish will prefer the live ones if you can make them live... Good luck!
