What size is your tank? I suggest to get an under gravel filter with power heads. This eliminates any size fish being sucked up. I have these on all my tanks ranging from 10 gal. to 75 gal. and have never had a problem and keeps the tank much cleaner. Just make sure you get a power heads that suits your size tank. Check the GPH rating or it could turn your tank into a whirl pool. Piggy back filters cycle the water but not the sediments in the gravel.

Filters really don't pick up the poop. That is up to you to remove. The main reason filters are there are to help clean the bi-products of the fish from actual water out whether through chemical, biological or mechanical filtration. Certain filters provide all of the above such as Marineland's Bio-wheel series filters. These filters provide the biological bacteria which breaks down nitrates from the water. The filter also holds filter floss (mechanical) which filters out larger particles that pass through onto the carbon (chemical) and returns into the tank. There are plenty of other things that you can do like siphon the larger stuff there.

The filter may be too strong for your tank. OR the fish may have been sick and got sucked in there right before death. Generally healthy fish won't get sucked into the filter. I guess a real small healthy fish could get sucked in there. Maybe replace fish with larger ones that will have an easier time escaping the intake. Check your water perameters just to be on the safe side, the possibility that the fish were sick before this happened is high. Poor water quality may be to blame, not the filter.

First I would suggest you turn down the flow rate on the filter. Most have an adjustment on the top somewhere. Secondly, you can use a piece of ladies hose over the intake to help prevent this problem, or a part of a replacement sponge filter cut to fit over the end of the filter intake.

Well, you need to start by turning your filter off and very quickly, take off the filter, run it to a sink, and see if you can get the fish out of the filter. Hopefully they are only in the intake tube and they didn't hit the impeller yet. In that case, they might be alive. It sounds like you already got them out though. In that case, to prevent this from happening again, do what Magicman says, he knows everything...

try do get a replacement Part exension tube for your filter, like the one follows
http://www.petsmart.com/global/search/search_results.jsp?Nao=24&In=Fish&N=2030112&Ne=176
That prevents the sucking in of any fish
Maybe you could also tell as the brand you have or post a pic on here, maybe we can tell you were the adjust knob is, I haven't seen any filter system without and adjustment knob yet

Hope that helps

turning down the flow rate could help, but you really need to a mesh over the intake.
