yeah... basically all my female bettas are dying except 3 (one of them is currently breeding). the three are fairly new, one's probably 2 yrs old, another is probably about 1.5yr and the other is probably right around 1yr old, maybe younger, I only got her a month or so ago.

anyway, they older ones aren't sick or anything, just old. well over 4yrs old. they're pretty beasty. this year they've slowed down a lot, and now the younger ones have started picking at them and taking over (especially the "pet/favorite" of the alpha, she's really following in her foot steps, I guess it's good they still have a leader). they mostly sit on the bottom and they just look awful. I know the alpha is going soon, she can barely swim long enough to eat, which was her favorite activity.

makes me sad, I wish they didn't have to die. anyway, anyone else have sad dying fish stories? I could use some sad stories so I don't feel so crazy to be so attached to "just fish"

ok i want to start an aquarium soon. money is a little tight to get the really nice stuff, so i want a real expert to answer me and tell me what they have and what might work. ty

ok so i am thinking of getting a 30 gallon tank. my first Q is how much do those tanks cost? i want 3 different fish type - yellowtail damselfish, spotted cardinalfish, bicolor blenny; which leads me to 2 Q's - what type of decorations and needed things should i get for the tank? also what food? and being i am getting only those 3 kinds of fish and i have a 30 gallon tank, how many of each should i get that will still leave room for health and happiness? ty for good answers :)

1 more Q, what gadgets or whatever will need to bought? like ill need a filter, heater, but what else? i just need really a list of every item you would have to set up, clean, and maintain a nice tank.

I just turned off the light in my tank and i turned on the light of my living room and i look back in the tank and all of my anemones tentacles are like sucked into the little body at the bottom. Also my clownfish is now just laying at the bottom of the tank. They were both just fine 10 minutes ago. Does anybody know what possibly couldve happened? Advice please?

I have a 55 gallon tank that I got from a friend about 5 years ago. Until now, I had no idea that the filter had cartridges or could be detached and changed. We have only had a VERY happy pleco living in it.

I want to begin to adding fish, so I took a water sample to PetSmart. My nitrate level is "off the chart" and there is amonia present. The girl pointed us to a new filter (can't find a brand name on the old one) that is $150.00 and said that the other filters will not work. Is this true and/or could someone recommend a decent filter that may be a little cheaper?

My electric yellow just let her babies out of her mouth. Should I take the mother out of the aquarium? She hasn't eaten in over a week, and I'm worried that she might try to eat the babies. However, I have another, larger red zebra in the same tank or is also mouth brooding. I don't think she will eat them, but if its ok, I'll take her out too when hers' are born.

When should these begin eating? I have added some tiny tropical flakes in, but they don;t seem interested,

Any help is appreciated.

I have a 100+ aquarium with tons of fish. Everyone seems healthy (so far). Recently I put a white feeding thing in there to eat while I was out of town. I forgot about it and it started to mold.

Now there is mold all over the place. It's a white mold of some sort. I've tried hosing it out, washing the rocks out, but it just starts coming back by the next day.

Any ideas of what will kill it before it gets my fish?

I have a 15 gal. freshwater tank that's been set up for about a month now. It has a small piece of driftwood in it, but I got it at a really great fish store. It's one that's safe for tanks. Anyways, it's growing something. It's white-ish and about an inch tall, it waves in the water. What is it? Algae? If so, do cory fish eat it?? If they don't, what fish will? I really don't want to use chemicals unless I REALLY have to.

I have a koi pond and hard water... very hard water. I just found out that salinity matters. So if I add pure salt dissolved first in pond water will that make it softer. I've had my koi 3 weeks and all they do is hide under the rock I elavated in the water for them. They never come out though even for food. They eat it when we aren't around, but always hide when we are around. Is this because of the water, or because they still need more time to adjust to the pond?

I have 1 cherry barbs and 2 cory, I have a heated, 10 gallon tank. I am not planning to get any more cories or cherry barbs (i know that they need to be kept in schools) but I woudl like another species of fish that won't hog all the food, kept in pairs and is compatible in a ten gallon tank and my current fish.

I have 3 sarasa comet fish in my little pond and I have no clue what gender they are. I have had them for about a month and a half and I have noticed these extremely small things (about as big as this line _) that have the shape of a fish, swim like one, and go away when I stick my hand near them. I was just wondering if they were babies, tadpoles or a type of bug. Also, I found this white sack with what looks like little bubbles inside and was wondering if it was an egg sack, thing. Thanks! :)

I received a bit of good advice posting my last fish problem here, so I thought I'd give it another go. A couple of days ago, my 10 gallon fish tank began to make a strange noise; it's nothing loud or abnoxious. Every now and again, it sounds as if something were being dropped into the water--and trust me, that's not happening.

Now, I don't have the best history with fish--I'm new at this--, and the ones I own now are the first I've had with this tank. In the five months I've owned these fish , I have done little in the maintenance of my tank, other than water changes when the water level drops, and leveling the pH level.

I know I suck at owning fish--please don't answer to state that. I know it, and am working on it.

There's also salt build up around the filter cartridge--the thing that looks like you could scrub dishes with it? Do I need to clean that--and if so, how?--or replace it?

Any help on these problems would be appreaciated.

Thanks

ok so i want to start a aquarium. i don't know what type of tank i can afford so i am thinking a 10 gallon? the fish i want to put in is 1 angelfish, 1 discus (maybe 2? i need help to know if this fish will be ok alone..) 2 blue coral platies, and i want 1 kuhli loach. this is what i need help with... first off, will 1 discus be ok in the aquarium? same question with the kuhli loach, will it be ok being the only species of its kind in the aquarium? my last question is; is there is enough room in the 10 gallon tank for all the fish i might have to be happy and healthy? which would be 5 fish if i do not need 2 discus' and loaches, and 7 if i did need 2 discus' and loaches. is that enough room? ty for your answers and best answer gets the points :)
