Some breeders in Asia said, "Let's make a really slow, fat fish, and we won't stop there, we'll give it ridiculously large eyes!" It was all part of a cruel joke... (the first part is true, I made up everything after the first quotation mark...)

They are bred that way. Chinese and Japanese have been breeding strange goldfish types for centuries. Why did they breed them? Because they are cute. Demekin are beautiful goldfish.
