Piranha can easily be trained to take fish fillets from the grocery store. If your store has a fresh fish counter, try talking to the department manager about buying their fish that goes out of date. It will still be good for the fish, you can usually get it far cheaper and you can freeze the extra.

You can buy live food cheaper at a bait store than an aquarium store, but there is always the chance of disease problems.

To tell you the truth, it sounds to me like you shouldn't have piranhas. They're very delicate and demanding fish and it seems that you didn't spend enough time researching them and considering these kinds of things before you bought them.

That said, piranhas eat more than just feeder fish. In fact, many people dislike giving their piranhas feeder fish because of the high risk of transmitting diseases and parasites and because feeders are usually not very nutritious. Some people feed theirs various bits of seafood and pieces of raw lean beef. You can find a lot more information and get some pretty good answers to your questions at www.monsterfishkeepers.com .
