I have a 15 gal. freshwater tank that's been set up for about a month now. It has a small piece of driftwood in it, but I got it at a really great fish store. It's one that's safe for tanks. Anyways, it's growing something. It's white-ish and about an inch tall, it waves in the water. What is it? Algae? If so, do cory fish eat it?? If they don't, what fish will? I really don't want to use chemicals unless I REALLY have to.

That's a bit of fungus and no fish will eat it, but it's easy to scrub off. I would suggest you remove the piece of driftwood and scrub that area well under very hot water. Scrubbing in some salt will help kill it as well.

It sounds like this is some type of alge. It was probably in a dormant phase on the drift wood in the store and it started to grow again once it landed in your tank. I'm not sure if cory fish will eat it, but I would be questioning now, if this white thing came to life on my piece of driftwood, what else is going to come to life and am I endangering my fish because of it. It might be worth considering removing the drift wood for now, letting this thing die off and then restablishing the driftwood. I believe there is a special way to clean driftwood, there is a mild - very mild - home remeady cleaning solution that you can make up. It might be worth it to look into that some more.

Although I've never seen white algae in a freshwater tank before, anything that is growing that is not growing on a fish is almost certainly algae.

A Chinese Alger Eater will eat algae, but they get big and are ugly.

You can also buy snails that eat algae.
