Fish - June 2007

I have a betta that I bought a week ago from a pet store. I bought some neon tetras at the same time. I put them in the tank so they could get used to it and be comfortable and kept the betta in the little jar he came in, floating in the ten gallon. I dumped most of the water in his jar out and refilled it with tank water once a day. After 5 or 6 days I netted the betta and put him in.
He seemed happy and healthy enough, exploring his new home, swimming through the plants and under the slate rock cave and eating whatever I put in the tank (except the freeze dried bloodworms). I fed him tubifex worms and regular tropical fish flakes.
Now, around 2 days after I put him in the tank, something bad has happened to him: I checked the tank this evening to see how the fish were doing and the betta was on the bottom, with his body almost vertical- just sitting there with his head up high. I looked closer and saw a piece of his fin had come off. His fins were disintegrating (see more details)

I have recently got a gulf toadfish and today I was offered a puffer. I'm not sure what type puffer he is. I don't mind if the toadfish eats him, only if he will attack the toadfish.

i have 2 male blue gouramis and 1 female gold gourami in a 29 gal tank. it seems that they chase each other. the blue gouramis became darker in color. the gold gourami sometimes chases back. are they fighting or are they mating?

I bought a strawberry anenome a few weeks ago and since then i have had 2 shrimp die (one i found the anenome eating) and 2 other anenomes have died. is the strawberry anenome killing them or is it just coincidence. He is really small he is about the size of a half dollar maybe smaller more like a quarter.

Well this morning when i woke up to feed my fishes i lifted my lid and I saw these worm like creatures.

I was i like how these get here!?!?

So I decided to scope them out of there, and so i did but some of them, i accidentally made them drop in my aquarium but before i can reach them my angelfishes ate them.

I feel horrified right now because i dont know if it is a parasite or not.

Please tell me what they are and where they came from please.

I just got a new fish for my 15 gal. tank. It's a Dwarf Gourami Fire male. Mostly redish-orange with a blue top fin. You can google images of what they look like for ideas. Anyone have a good name for him?? He's in with 3 platy (Mikey, Mini & Indi) and a small school of neons. I'm looking for an original name. Please help!

I have two adult angel fish one is black and silver and one is pure yellow. They will lock lips and push each other and they twitch. I came home from work today and their lips are swollen and their fins are torn. I was doing some research online and it mentioned they do this when their fighting and when their mating. Well how do i know which it is? They are hurting each other but i don't want to seperate them if their trying to mate.

i bought one at a garage sale today that was never used. it sat in her garage for a year and the original label is stuck to the outside of the glass. it covers 1/4 of the tank. i tried rubbing alcohol,didnt work. i know fingernail polish remover is supposed to work but i dont have any. anybody got any home remedies that are a for sure thing? i dont want to buy a product because that was the idea of buying it cheap at a garage sale

My goldfish were 1.5" when I got them, they're now each 6" long. I have them in a 20 gallon long tank. One 'fish expert' told me they'd get to 8-10" long and needed at the largest a 29 gallon tank. Another 'fish person' said they need AT LEAST a 40-50 gallon tank now, and possibly a larger one ... and said they can grow to be 1.5 FEET or larger. I love my two fish, and want them to grow as large as possible ... but we live in a third story apartment that is 'small' ... I need help deciding 'what to get' to make my fish 'really happy' in our apartment.

My swordtail stays at the top of the tank and stays there most of the time it stays there and doesnt swim any where else.... what should i do.
Why would he stay up there all the time?

I have 3 other fish along in the tank which are:

I have 4 goldfish, 2 white goldfish, and a baby koy. I think one of the white goldfish is pregnant, only cos about 2-3 days ago one of the goldfish was following and chaising it a lot, and obviously has put on a big tummy!! Question is 1.how do i know 2.how long they are pregnant?

stable population?

I recently bought 6 small bags of Daphnia and emptied them into my pond. I saw on a website this is a bad idea as this water is often full of pollution and disease
Don't most reputable pet shops sell their live food in clean water?

Also is it possible to give an idea of how much daphnia is required for a stable breeding population (our pond is 30-40 sq ft)

last weekend my father and i went fishing.we found baby catfish that looked like they just hatched from the egg. I scooped 10 up and now have them in my home. I want to watch them grow, and learn about them. anyone have any idea how i could take care of them?They are called Bull heads, and i have them in a round container 6 in. in diameter and 5 in high, i'm gonna have to buy a tank i think, well thanx in advance it's appreciated.

I have a freshwater aquarium in my office with a bunch of plain old fish and an algae eater. I just introduced a new algae eater on Friday and when I came to work Monday everything in the aquarium was dead (except two snails I also have). I figure the new fish was diseased or something. Any idea what could have done it (and still spared the snails)?
