stable population?

I recently bought 6 small bags of Daphnia and emptied them into my pond. I saw on a website this is a bad idea as this water is often full of pollution and disease
Don't most reputable pet shops sell their live food in clean water?

Also is it possible to give an idea of how much daphnia is required for a stable breeding population (our pond is 30-40 sq ft)

You should be ok. You are unlikely to introduce deseases as most daphnia sources don`t have any fish in them which is why they are good daphnia sources. I used to feed a litre of daphnia (solid no water|) a week to fish in my aquariums. I caught this in local ponds. I fed this untreated for years with no problems as the ponds had no fish in them so there were no pathogens to transfer to fish. Most pet shops sell daphnia in treated water anyway. In general my experience is that-: if your pond water quality is good, your fish will be healthy and able to resist pests and deseases. This must be so or there would be no wild fish.
As for breeding cladocera (daphnia species) in a fish pond. The fish will usually eat em as quickly as they can breed.
Remember that daphnia are mostly shell and no "meat" they are good as fish laxative but not much good for providing nourishment. Just as an aside, I had 2 ponds for amphibians -Toads, newts and frogs- which came in from the wild. I didn`t even feed the goldfish that were already in the ponds yet they flourished because I tried to imitate natural, local conditions. Best of luck with your fish.

Generally speaking, the advice you saw on the Internet pertains to a fish tank, Daphnia is usually collected from ponds set up for the just that purpose however, what are the chances of dragon fly's laying or any number of beastie getting in with the Daphnia, the water while it looks clear is too a certain degree stagnant etc. so in a fish tank Dragon fly larvae would cause havoc, however, your pond already runs that risk and the amount of volume means a few bags shouldn't so any harm. But I'd avoid it because I could.

if its an outside pond, it can fend off bacteria better than a tank. Remember there's more water per area in the pond. Fish store treat their tanks in a sense, but they get shipments in from all over all the time. I was a fish expert at petsmart and one of our taks backed up we killed 100's of goldfish. We had to scoop the dead ones out... fun... they made the water toxic, but you can change their entire system, so they added new fish and their water... IT WAS NOT FUN! If you already have the treatment for you pond that removes chlorine and cuch itll be fine... theres the one with aloe in it and it will help coat the fish. I'd go buy that, they sell it at walmart... stress something I forgot.

pass to a petstore and ask the clerk help you get each and each of the nicely suited water therapy chemical compounds. there are particular chemical compounds you purchase that kills the chlorine interior the water, and creates a stability perfect for the fish. Get your mom and dad to coach you the thank you to do it reason you're able to degree each physique out in accordance to how lots water is interior the tank. Your mom and dad could help you be taught the thank you to maintain a tank besides seeing which you would be wanting all varieties of gadgets for it, like an oxygen tube that combines oxygen into the water, a air purifier to maintain tank sparkling, and you will could desire to scrub the tank manually each so often. it is not that great of a deal as quickly as you be taught all of it, yet your fish will at last die in case you only keep it in faucet or bottle water. some fish are amazingly hardy in spite of the incontrovertible fact that, it could final a sturdy collectively as, even in spite of the incontrovertible fact that it rather is lots extra valuable to shelter it.
