Purchase a simple vacuum, which is just a length of hose with a plastic cylinder meant to ease the suction strength so you don't suck up gravel and fish.

Use this vacuum to suck water from the tank into a bucket, and you just dip it into the gravel and watch the waste fly out. In this way you are accomplishing the water change and vacuum at the same time.

Do this once per week and your tank will be nice and clean for a long time. Do it once per month and your tank will gradulally get filthier and filthier and you'll never keep up with it.

The basic gravel vacuum is a simple siphon. You simply put the narrow end in a bucket that is lower than the tank. Then push the wide end into the gravel a fair number of times. You will see gravel being forced up the wide part of the tube. This also pushes water into the bucket. Once you get the water flowing you simply raise up the wide end slightly and the gravel falls out. At this point water show be flowing on it's own into your bucket. Now just gently press the wide end into the gravel to clean it.

PS- There are other more complex devices with pumps and the like, but it's not needed.

You can get a vacuum that you flick a switch and a mini pump generates a flow of water up a tube depositing the pieces of dirt in a porous bag, or if you siphon off some of the water during a water change your run the piece of hose over the gravel thus taking the rubbish out with the water.

You buy a gravel vaccum and pump up the water. Once the water reaches a certain point, the water will flow continuously. I usually just push the vacuum into the rocks and lift out to clean them.

I would definately use a siphon hose. Just as dependable as a vaccuum and a whole lot cheaper. Just remember with a siphon hose, never remove more than 1/3 of your total water level.

There's a plastic thing you buy from petstores. It's like a tube with a really wide end. The wide end goes into the tank and you suck on the other end to get the water going.
