We just set up a new 20 gallon tank and put 3 platys in it to establish it. So far, for the first couple days, they have been very timid and hide behind anything they can. They are so timid that they are reluctant to come out to eat. Is this normal for fish in a new tank or should we be worried?

Just one very important question on you
Do you turn off the light at night?
The light is suppose to be off at nights for at least 12-14 hours and on 10-12 hours during the day
It is possible that your platys are irritated

hope that helps

It's normal with a new tank. The water chemistry has to level out and 3 platy's isn't going to help much with a 20 gallon tank. The are considered non-aggressive and more timid unless there are more fish. Don't be surprised if some of them die as it's normal with developing a new tank cycle. I would recommend adding in a few more every 3-4 days until you have about 8-10 fish in there.

Hi there,
how are you? I have an established 29 gallon tank. About a month ago I added three platys to it and it seemed like two of them hid out for several days. Then they came out and are now doing fine. Two days ago I added six more of different varieties. Some of them stayed out right away and some of them are being a little more shy. I think it's more that they just need to get use to the tank and the other fish in there. I haven't lost any of them yet, and may not. You never know. I do have one male platy, eight females, five neons, three of another fish that I don't remember the name of, an algae eater and a frog. Everyone's getting along just fine!

Have a great day.

platies aren't very timid -- just give them a chance to get used to their new home. they are fairly social and one of the better fish to keep in a community tank.
