Fish - May 2007

I just found out, after buying the painted tetra fish, that the colors aren't natural and are injected. I also found out to paint them like that they get rid of the fishes' most defensive body layer, so they are more prone to dying and disease. I put in some cure stuff that is supposed to make fish who are already sick heal, even though the tetra aren't sick. I took out my filter and it was really dirty, so now I don't know how much more dangerous it is in there for those already really weak fish. Um, two dannio-type things-fish are acting really weird and wouldn't eat, and the two tetra (who are actually perch) didn't go to the food I put into the aquarium either. Any help on the tetra or the weird-acting small-black striped fish would be nice, thanks alot.

I had to put my Beta and my goldfish in the same tank for travel. The next day, my goldfish had like one fin left and no tail, almost dead.

I recently moved and had to leave my empty tank behind at my old place for about a month. I didn't have any fish yet, but I left it w/ new water and had "fed" it a few times to cycle it. Problem is, I wasn't able to make it back to my old place enough to keep checking the ammonia levels and I'm not sure if it cycled or not. I left it going for about 2 months while I was moving and I'd like to put fish in now.

The ammonia, nitrate and nitrite levels are all at zero, so I can't be sure it ever cycled properly. Do you think fish would be okay? What should I do if I put fish in and the ammonia levels suddenly rise? Can I cycle again?

i am starting the cycling process of my 90 gallon saltwater tank, along with the saltwater mix, in ro/di water. to date it has live sand in it thats it. I heard you can use pure ammoina drops to create the bacteria you need to cycle, without having to use fish. has anyone done this sufficently? will it harm my sand?

My boyfriend and I recently purchased a Gold Nugget after our large pleco died and he was the last one to die in my recent
"Fish tank crisis" What had happend was i started a bigger fish tank and i didnt have any god baceteria in it adn my fish started to all die. Well i let my tank cycle and we have new fish in the tank and they have been there for id say about 3 weeks. No deaths... everything is fine. So while we were out shopping around we found the gold nugget and he was doing GREAT he wasnt being shy or anything. Well we've been busy the past few days and havent really been paying any attention to the fish (sitting and staring at it for an hour lol) as we usually do. So we didnt notice a change in him except our 2 irredescent sharks and our paroon shark started showing signs of Ich. So i took the carbon filter out, put my ich stuff in, put the carbon filter back in the next day, did a 25% water change, then put more ich stuff in there. Well, this morning i noticed my fish tank

Ok, so I got some new fish this weekend and one of the platys is HUGE! The two of them stick together and the big fat one does not seem to want to eat. I have looked at different pics of platys and still can't tell if it is even a female, but I am telling you, the stomach is HUGE! Could I have a pregnant fish and if so, how do I know for sure...

Thanks..

PS. I have a 55 gallon and only 12 fish right now, I hear that platys have LOTS of babies and will eat there young... If pregant, what can I do to save the babies?

i just got 3 pairs of different tropical fishes yesterday and today one of them is already dead... i felt my tank was getting dirty when i fed them and there was food at the bottom of it.. did it die becoz of 'overfeeding' or the 'dirty water'? i tht tropicals r the easiest to maintain.. i also have the filter 24 hrs on as well as the temperature controller.. help me so i can take care of the others..

I want to know what's the easiest type of fish to maintain.
It should be low maintence and not easily die.
The fish being colorful would help too.
Any suggestions would be helpful.

I have 2 bloodfins (and other types of fish). 1 is fine, but the other isn't. He can't seem to swim properly, and when he does swim, he swims on his side or upside-down. When I look at him, he looks fine, except that his head is greenish, instead of silver. His gills also seem to be very red, and I don't know if his gills are normal, because I can't see my other bloodfin's, because I can't see the bottom of him. I removed the sick bloodfin from my main tank, and am keeping a close watch on him. What is wrong???

Earlier today, she looked "dizzy" and wasn't swimming straight. Now she is laying on the bottom, trying to swim up, but flips back on the ground.

Can I cure it?

I went to a fish store, and this guy had like about 50 aquariums, i wanna know how does he filtrate all these tanks. ( i forgot to ask him). About 35 or so of them were all connected to one filter, i think. The filters were of pvc pipe. The tanks were about 15 - 20 gallons each. how did he filtrate all his tanks.

I changed the water to see if it would help-it didn't. He is not swimming. He just dangles at the top of his bowl. I have a small 1/2 gallon bowl with a phake plant. He was moving a few days ago alot. He is not belly up- just normal body position- but blowng bubbles and not swimming at all.
