Fish - May 2007

I want to know if I can put a pleco in the tank with my male betta fish. The tank is about 5 gallons and he is about a year old. When I first bought my betta last year about a week after I got him I put a algea eater in his tank and I forgot the name of the other fish, but it was small and zipped around the tank eating algea from the plants and was like white in color. Any ways I want to stay the night at my boyfriend (husband now) at the time and when I got back home the little fish was dead and a few hours later the algea eater was dead also. So I am guessing that my betta killed them, but I am not to sure. So can I put a pleco in with him? or will he just kill it? I don't wanna go out and buy a pleco and just have it die on me. Any one have them together?

30 gallon, 1 male betta, 3 glass cats, 2 albino corys. Recently, I've noticed this white wispy stuff attached so some of my live plants, and I'd like to know what it is. It's a lot like spider webs, and it's taken over some of my smaller plants. Are these harmful, or are they okay?? Algae?
I've been using a lot of bacteria recently because my filter is about a month new, so I've been trying to stabilize it. Is this 'growth' bacteria?

Help please!

When you're calculating how many inches of fish can fit in an aquarium, do you use fish length as measured with or without the tail?

I have a whole lot of staghorn algae in my tank.. I have done some research on it and have done everything I have found to try and get rid of it, with the exception of getting an American Flag Fish. I really dont want to medicate the tank with some algae be gone chemicals.. Any suggestions... It seems to be taking over the tank.... It is a 50 gal. with some glofish, zebra danios, green flame tetra, cardinal tetra, neon tetra, other tetras, platys, dwarf puffers, chocolate albine pleco, and a clown loach. With a Magnum 350 pro canister filter...The staghorn algae is now covering rocks, not just leaves on plants... I cant really back off on the light with out inhibiting the plant growth. I already use minimal light. Gosh I am just so tired of looking at this crap... its so ugly.. ANY IDEAS?????

What are the various components of chemical filter media, I know carbon / charcoal, but what kind of charcoal I must use? Tell me about other types of media that I can have for a freshwater aquarium.

I am completely new at this. I set the aquarium up yesterday and have resisted the temptation to stick my Betta in it. Its a 10 gallon tank. Everything I have read so far about the nitrogen cycle is confusing. Do I need to buy a test kit? What fish do I start with and when? Everything recommends Danios or barbs, but I dont like those fish very much. I know with a 10 gallon aquarium I have limited space so I dont want to be stuck with fish I dont want. Here is a list of the fish I have and want... Betta, he has been in a 4 gallon bowl. I got him 2 weeks ago and seems very happy. If I stick him in the tank by himself will he start the nitrogen cycle? or if I start with him will I not be able to add new fish because he will become territorial over the tank? I also like Platies, can I start with them? How many? What sex? I also want something to help clean the tank, Corey cat maybe? I know I eventually want to add Ghost shrimp. I know I cant add all of these at once. Help me please!!!

I have a fantail goldfish...she is currently in a 2 1/2 gallon tank with a filter. I also have a 55 gallon tank with some gouramis(community), platys, mollies, corys, and some guppies. Even though my 2 1/2 gallon has a fliter, i noticed a TON of material on her artifical plants and decor. I continually try to clean the plants and such but it keeps coming back. I can't even see the real color of the plants since all i see is brown. Would you recommend putting her in my 55 gallon?? If not, what else can i do?

I just got a new tank with a marineland BIO WHEEL filter. It holds one comet red cap goldfish. Recently a small amount of bubbles has appeared on the rim of the tank. The water levels and Ph levels are correct and there is only water condidtioners and some microoraganisms I got in a bottle. Is this normal?

I bought them yesterday, but this morning, the long finned danio is chasing the others, trying to nip their tails. I bought them all at the same time, and to start off with they seemed fine. There are only 4 altogether in a 60L tank. I don't know what do do? I haven't seen any damage to their tails or fins, but I am worried. They have plants and ornaments and caves to hide in/behind, but please help!
