i have a very small goldfish that i won at a fair, and i put it in to a pretty small bowl. i got it food, and put some marbles at the bottom. whenever i walk into to check on it his head is between to marbles, it isn't stuck or anything, but just to make sure i tap on the side, and he starts to swim frantically around, what should i do?

Your goldfish is exposed
It is hiding its head in the pepples to avoid the light/ movement.
You need to put some shelther in there so it can hide.
Think about it: gold fish are prey to larger fish. It has a natural instinct to seek cover.
Why not buy some rocks/ small plants that it can hide it.
It will probably die from stress if you continue tapping the glass, and it has no where to hide.

Goldfish should never be in a bowl. Actually, no fish should. You don't have a filter so the water is stagnant. The only oxygen going in to the water is from the surface, which isn't a large area. The minimum requirement for a goldfish is a 10 gallon tank with extra filtration.
Goldfish put out a huge bioload of ammonia from urine, feces, decaying food (they're messy eaters) and even through exhaling used oxygen through their gills. This is the reason for the larger tank and filtration. As well, if you're overfeeding the fish (goldfish don't really have stomachs..and can only handle fish food about 1 1/2 x the size of their eyes), it's adding waste to the bowl.
It's living in its own waste and breathing it in so it's being poisoned. When you tap the side of the bowl, it's frantic because it's scared. It's not moving because it's sick. Tapping the bowl is like a jackhammer to fish.

ou should get it an aquarium, and get it something to hide under like Andrew said. You may want to stop tapping on the glass, and not use marbles or a bowl. Also, try this gold fish food. Try Tetra Fin Goldfish Flakes. My 17 goldfish LOVE THEM! Also, make sure there isn't too much light where the goldfish is living. Hope this helps!

Barb R and Andrew M are right, but if you have a bowl with a goldfish in it, make sure its half filled, cleaned once a week and you feed the fish once a day, feeding your fish 3 or 2 tmes a day is outdated info, so don't.

Andrew is right, it's scared because it has no hiding places. I would give him a few small plastic plants and also consider giving him a dark colored gravel or marbles if what he has now is light colored. Some fish respond poorly to a light colored substrate in the tank or bowl.

Take it out of jail!! Small bowls are only a temporary place for them. If you're not going to put it in a 10 or,better, a 20-gal tank, give it away to someone who will.

you've a 5 gallon tank, it really is applicable for a betta fish. pass out and get a heater, re-set up your tank with new water, the hot heater, and washed decorations (rinse thoroughly in warmth water), and then %. your betta fish out on the keep after the tank has been up and operating for a week. I repeat, after the tank has been up and operating for a week. With the right situations, like a 5 gallon tank, the heater, and the clear out, your betta will stay for a lengthy time period and be an exceedingly eye-catching puppy for the tank.

you need to get that goldfish a small filter, and at least a five gallon tank, or he won't live much longer. . .
