I just got a new goldfish today and i was wondering if it is ok to keep it in a container that is 8in tall where the widest point is about 16in around and the narroist point(in the middle) is 10in around and there is an aquatic plant that is about 7in tall, but there are only a few thin leaves. also do i need a filter?

That container would do for over night until you can get a true tank with a filter. If it's just a small common goldfish I would say get a 10-20 gallon tank and that will work for quite a while. He's still out grow even that, but it will be some time before he does. If it's a fancy goldfish, get a 20 gallon tank and he will grow to full size in it and never out grow the tank.

Hope that helps

You would probably want to transfer it to a 10 gal (min) tank. The decorations you have now seem fine. YOU DO NEED A FILTER. Goldfish create a lot of waste. If you don't have a filter you would need to change the water every day. Also when and if you transfer the fish don't put him in a tank full of completely new water it might die! Also if bought a goldfish that isn't a fancy (long curvy tail) i reccomend a longer tank.

A) You absolutely MUST have a filter. Goldfish produce prodigious amounts of waste and need gentle moving water to penetrate the surface to ensure that they get oxygen.
B ) Your goldfish is not a labyrinth fish like the betta, it needs oxygen IN its water to breathe or you'll decimate its lifespan down to MAYBE a year.
C)Goldfish can quickly grow beyond the capacity of their container, so it is ESSENTIAL that your fish be given the minimum of a 10 gallon tank. If it is very small, consider giving it a couple of companions. The rule for babies is 5 gallons per INCH of fish. If he is more than two inches long, that rule becomes 7-10 gallons per fish. Your aquarium is currently about 6.76 gallons. If it isn't an aquarium, get one.
D) Buy frozen foods such as peas, defrost a couple, deshell them, and put them into the tank. This will make sure that his digestive tract stays normal.
E) Goldfish eat anything that can fit into their mouths, this includes the leaves on your plant. Consider that.
F) Goldfish will continue to grow to the size of their container. Large containers allow them room to grow. I have a gorgeous 8 inch ranchu right now and when I got him he was barely 1 inch.
G) Goldfish can live very long lives, it isn't uncommon for a very well cared for goldie to live for 10+years. Ultimately, you are the determiner of the length and quality of life.

ok goldfish's can make a tank or bowl pretty dirty quick, you should be able to keep him in there but you are going to have to clean the tank more without the tank set up, as for a filter no you do need to get a small bubble stone and put in there hook it up to a air pump and that should be enough air for it, if you are wanting a fish to keep in a small bowl set up then I suggest you get a beta they are more clean and you might would have better luck,,, also don't for get to add a clorine remover!

You will be having a goldfish funeral soon. You need to find out about the nitrogen cycle before the goldfish floats belly up.

If you think I am kidding, just wait. Time will prove me right.

You don't NEED a filter...but you should have one, gold fish are very dirty...

A single fancy gold fish needs atleast 12 gals of water, they get to be about 6 inches long and need 2 gals of water per inch of fish...

Hope this helps...GOOD LUCK!!!!
