8 weeks is a very reasonable estimate. You might start looking closely at about 6 weeks just to be on the safe side though.

As for mollies and guppies. I can't tell you how to sex them. But I can say that Neon's make a good choice for a small tank. There does not seem to be a problem with them getting along. Mollies, Guppies, Neon's and tetras just to name a few are all good docile fish to keep in a small tank. As Far as how many? A good rule for the amount of fish a tank will accommodate is one inch (1") of fish per gallon of water. So if you have a 9 gallon fish tank, you should have no more than 9 inches of fish! Picture them all lined up nose to tail. this can not total more than the number of gallons the tank Will hold! This is what most fish stores will recommend. Of course you can put more, but you will increase the amount of waste in the tank and the bacteria that helps dispose of this waste will have a hard time keeping up and the ammonia level will rise and your fish will die! Of course you can never have too few!

actually you can tell at about 1 month for guppies and about 3 - 4 weeks for platys, and 4 - 5 weeks for mollies.

Unless if sometime has changed since I was pregnant (my son is six months) , they could not determine his sex until he was 5 months in development.
