Fish - March 2007

I've been having troubles with the ammonia readings in my 5 gal tank. I only had a couple little platties in there. When I started it up, I cycled it and kept it up well. They were doing well for a long time. A couple of days ago, I noticed that one of them was missing. I thought maybe he got sucked up, but I couldn't see that he was. I could NOT find him So today I came home from work to find my other platty swimming funny and twisting wierdly at the bottom. I took him out right away and put him in a seperate bowl. I went to do another partial water change. While I was vacuuming the tank, I saw what was left of my other fish - he was completely decomposed and when I tried to net him out (and this is where it gets graphic) he pretty much came apart into shreds. SO, I had to do a complete water change.

Is there any way I can I save my other fish?? He's obviously dying-he can barely swim and just sits on the bottom - is there any way to save him? I feel so bad about this!

The frontosa is about 3 months old after purchasing date and it's still the same size since i bought it. now i know it lives around 25 years but shouldnt it have grown since then, after all it was only an inch when i bought it. It lives in a 55gallon with 2 peacock cichlids and 4 tiny convicts(2 1-inchers and 2 2-inchers). I do weekly water changes of about fifty percent, remove ammonia nitrate and nitrate when they appear in my tank. i keep water with a high ph of about 8.9 and hard and alkaline and feed him/her spectrum pellets, frozen cichlid delight, beefheart, bloodworms, and some hikari gold sometimes. The filter is a fluval 305 with 2 powerheads for airation. There are 5 caves so i dont see why he wont grow. Could it be that im just impatient?

My NO2 and NO3 levels are skyhigh, and from what I understand that is really not so good for the fish. What can I do to get it down!? My redtail shark has turned tan so I know there is something seriously wrong. My ph is slightly low. my GH is at the 30 mark. My KH is 40. PH is 6.5. NO2 is 10 and NO3 is 80. HELP!

I have thought of getting one but I'm not to sure how many gallons they hold and what fish would be ok in them.
I've thought of getting either male guppies or neon tetras. How many guppies or neon tetras would be able to fit?

I already have 2 guppies, 2 neon tetras, 1 albino catfish, and 1 African water frog in the tank and the Betta leaves all of those creatures alone.
Not sure if a live shrimp is in their diet or an algae eating snail for that matter.
