Yes there is - and it's a bad one that shouldn't be followed!

Ten one inch neons aren't the same as a 10 inch goldfish.

I'm going to find my resource about this and get back to you.

EDIT: Okay, here's what I was looking for : http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AjaFR1hgItVumRoQtWnGkEHty6IX?qid=20070217174921AAi9sOJ&show=7#profile-info-LH5o5Kuiaa

Keep in mind, this "rule" is for freshwater - it doesn't even begin to apply to saltwater! Saltwater fish are more territorial and aggressive than freshwater - you generally can't mix similar colors or body shapes or members of the same family without one fish trying to drive what it considers a rival out of its territory. They demand excellent water quality, and should be given at least 5 gallons per small fish. Activity level is something else to consider.

This website can give you an approximate tank size needed for any species of saltwater fish: http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/categ.cfm?pcatid=15

The "inch of fish" rule is ONLY for fish that stay small their entire lives, like guppies or mollies. For them, its one inch of fish per a gallon. For bigger fish, that's a ridiculous rule since people would try putting a 10 inch fish in a 10 gallon tank, and it would barely have room to turn around. Saltwater tanks are very complicated things and you need lots of equipment, and lots of time to take proper care of it. Saltwater fish need a little bit more than 1" per gallon. A saltwater "expert" that hangs out at two different magazine's forums will go to great lengths to to tell you this is wrong and chastise you for not agreeing with him. It is a shame that one made him an admin and has published a few of his muddled thinking articles.

There is and it's supposedly 1 inch of fish per gallon - personally, I don't hink so because your once tiny fish may grow up to be too big for its tank and slow painful death by stunting ( the outside stops growing but the inside doesn't) and you need to research your fish before you buy them to know thier full adult length.

I'm pretty sure the general rule of thumb for any fish tank is one inch of fish per gallon.
