What you may have in the tank is fish lice. Find them and get them off of the fish. They are no good, they eat the slime coat off of the fish. Gently get the affected fish and hold him firmly at the surface of the water. If you can keep his gills submerged it would be better, if not, you have about a minute or so before he starts to suffer. You will have to act quickly. With tweezers grab the lice and wipe him on a paper towel. Let the fish go. Watch for more to appear. They like to get on the fins. If you don't remove them they will breed and there will be an outbreak in your tank. Wash your hands and rinse them well before you put your hands in the tank. Wash them again when you are done. I've done this before and its not too hard. Don't chase the fish too much to catch it either. If you have a net use that. I prefer hand catching though, its less stressful for the fish, if you do it right. Trap him slowly, herd him to the water's surface and cup him in your hand. They are easier to control if thier head is by your thumb and first finger and the tail lays back toward your pinky. Fold fins back to the body. Don't sqeeze but have a gentle but firm hold. Hope this helps.

What sort of insects?
I've never heard of anything other than parasites which look like worms or disc-like growths which need treating quickly or you'll lose the fish!Unfortunately the treatment is very strong and can kill all the bacteria in the filter the first time it's used! It's also advisable to remove the plants and disinfect them as the treatment will damage them!

Whatever they are you need to get rid of them.
Although they are probably fish lice these don't actually do the fish any harm. They feed on fungus the tries to grow on the fish.
Vist you local fish store and if possible catch one when it is free swiming to take to the shop.
If they are lice you may need to treat the tank(once you have iradicated the creatures) with an anifungal treatment

Call a pet store! Sounds like they have some sort of parasite and people at pet stores can help you. There could be something you can put in the water to help them. Poor fish!

It could be hook worms, fish lice, leeches, or any number of insect larvae feeding on your fish. What ever they are, you need to get rid of them. First you need to know what they are to properly treat the tank.

Insects can sometimes KILL your fish! Get them off IMMEDIATELY. Some are parasitic, others are EATING them. Either way, it's bad.
