Fish - March 2007

The pH has been 8.4 for a couple weeks. I'm gradually reducing the temperature every day to get it down to 75 degrees (from 80.) Both factors are causing the remaining amount of ammonia (that I'm treating with water changes) to become more and more toxic, so this is not about adding more fish and adjusting for them. I really don't want to use chemicals unless I have to. Thank you.

I've got water conditioner and dechlorinator tablets. They dissolve really fast. It's one tablet per ten gallon. My question is, can you put more than what it recommends? Will it hurt the fish or the water?

I've just bought a blister pack of frozen food for tropical fish but there's no directions on the packet. How many cubes do I feed them at a time and how long do I defrost it for? I've got ten community fish altogether. Any advice would be great!

i was wondering how big can a male betta get? i've tried searching the net to see if there was one as big as him, but can never find out. i've heard about 2 inches, but hes way bigger than that. he is also a crowntail...does the crowntail tend to be big?

I'm doing a science project on Betta fish. I'm going to have 4 males. 2 will each be in a medium large sized fish bowl and the other 2 will each be in a very large fish bowl (4 fish bowls in total). I want to see if the size will affect their behaviour.

What materials will I need to take care of them to the best ability? I will be experimenting on them for about 3-4 weeks. Thank you for helping!

I was looking for a scientific answer to the specifics of how it gets used up. I understand it depends on the load of organics and such in the tank. But I wanted to understand it more. I have a canister filter an ehiem 2217 and I have been putting the carbon filter pads that the company makes they are very expensive and I don't think they work very well at all. I was thinking of just getting some kind of pouch and dumping in a large amount of carbon. But I was trying to figure out if more carbon lasts longer because it gets used up less? I may have to do some research on this myself but I thought I might try this. i have a freshwater tank and it gets yellow fast it has 2 goldfish it's 29 gall. I also have a fluidized 300 gallon bed filter on it. I do gravel vacs 1 or 2twice a month. The gravel is clean.

I have a 35 gallon aquarium with platies, catfish, rainbowfish, and one placostumus. The snails came on some plants, and are multiplying quickly. How can I get rid of them? Picking them out one by one is not working. Is there another fish that would eat them that works well with the fish I already have?

bought these fish from a petstore, but when i went to look for care instructions i have a picture of a fish that looks similar to the flying fox - but im not really sure it is. this is the name on the tank i bought it from - Epalzeorhynchus kallopterus. however the pictures ive seen of this fish have a yellow stripe on top of the black. My fish dont appear to have any yellow, but a silver stripe - the color of the body, also has a black stripe running down its back like the flying fox but the stripe stops a bit before the eyes. almost apears to have a clear see thru head with some black showing through - i know fish vary even in the same species, but i really dont think these are flying foxes- however i dont know what else they might be. any ideas would be apreciated -
i just want to make sure i have the right fish - so i can care for it properly.
