I have been having a bad problem with the growth of brown algae in my 55 gallon and I want to grow some green algae. I have narrowed the problem down to the water in my area which is high in posphates or something, but I was looking for some way to get around this, is there something I am able to put into my water to get it right?

so...i found a betta I really like and i've been told I can add him (it IS a male) to my 10 gallon community tank.

Right now I have 3 fancy guppies (one male, 2 female), one male platy, one spotted cory, and one clown pleco.

has anyone had success with bettas in a similar tank set up?
please only answer if you have actually done this, i appreciate all the help, but it's one thing to say something and one thing to have actually had experience with it.

Thanks!

The one that follows the other, is actually the smaller one, but it keeps following the big one, and looks like it is chasing or trying to bit the bigger one's bottom. not the fins, but the fish's butt. Coud it be that the smaller one is a male fish, trying to get some action? Or is it that the smaller one is just aggressive? i give them plenty of food, i'm not sure what if they are fighting about or if they are playing??? Thank you.

His gills are sticking out, his face looks kinda irridescent. He's quit eating or he'll bite his food then spit it out. He's a lot less active, and I think he may have fin rot. His fins are deteriorating, but there's no visible fungus. He doesn't have spots of any sort and there's no cottony or velvety look to him. Also, he's a lot paler and his color is changing to a stressed out blue.... Please help! Thanks.

I just got a nice little 1 gallon tank that I want to put my sweet little fishy in. The instructions say to run the tank filter for at least two days before introducing any fish, but these are instructions for people that have to de-chlorinate their water. I got my water from a well source, which has worked well for all of my fish in regular bowls. Can I put my little guy in right now? I've had it plugged in for about two hours.

Are they more efficient than just a filter that hangs on the side of the tank?
How often would they need to be cleaned?
Any other pro's or con's to take into consideration?

This is a kind of debate going on between me and one of my friends and I was wondering if somebody could give me a scientific answer that had more of a base in truth. The fish in question is a Celestial Goldfish.
